The Star Trek Online official website has a Christmas day present in the form of the first ship description and details. While there's no actual in-game goodies, it's the first information we've been given on something that will probably end up in the final code of the game. We even a pretty good ship to start with: an iteration of the sexy Sovereign-class ship seen in the last Next Generation movies.
If there was ever any doubt that there wouldn't be much combat in the game, the NX-91001 (or as we like to call it, "The Nixy") is armed with 16 heavy-duty phaser arrays and 8 torpedoes. For the sci-fi tech nerds out there, the computer systems use a "Bioneural circuitry" that mimics organic neurons for super-crazy-fast computing. And no Star Trek ship would be complete without regenerative shields. Although this ship also boasts some incredibly thick future-alloy armor, as well.
We know Star Trek isn't all about combat, and we hope Star Trek Online will be more than that, but there's no denying that the allure of hopping into the bridge of this ship and kicking some space-butt is strong.

Just 8 torpedoes, or 8 Launchers? I would also like to see ablative generator-deployed hull armor.

It's 8 torpedo launchers, from what I can tell. Also, I think this ship actually has superior ablative armor? I know it's got some form of it, but I'm not clear on the specifics.

Er, meant to say eight torpedo launchers.
Also: I wonder how much ship customization is actually mechanical vs cosmetic, in the case of things like ablative armor and such?

Ok, I can forgive you for not knowing jack about Star Trek, because any halfway decent Trekky can instantly tell it's not a Sovereign class, either by the registry number, nacelle/pylon design, or the extra weapons pod spanning the two nacelles.
But then they go to say this:
"...an iteration of the sexy Sovereign-class ship seen in the last Next Generation movies..."
They pretty clearly state it is not THE Sovereign class, but an iteration of (probably a successor).
So please, just read next time, eh?

"no Star Trek ship would be complete without regenerative shields."? The only starfleet ship with regenerative shielding was Prometheus-class prototype USS Prometheus.
But since game is set early 25th century it's safe to assume they updated Soverign as well

The NX-91001 (or Nixy) is not the same ship as the Sovereign, thou it does share quite a few similarities with it. The tech its equipped with, as well as its size is different from the Sovereign, and it has quite a few external differences from the Sovereign as well.
Furthermore, i'd question a comment like "Temko" stating that there hasn't been ANY good Star Trek games. Bridge Commander, Klingon Academy and Starfleet Command (first game), all are examples of good games that are still played today, with both Bridge Commander and Klingon Academy actively being modded on a daily basis.
And to add... We haven't had a whole lot of Star Trek games, at all lately. Last one released (Star Trek Legacy) was a huge disappointment.

The option to play in space and on the ground for a sci fi MMO is something I am very interested in. I am not even a star trek fan and this appeals to me.

I know this game is going to be ship piloting a la EVE, with some away team adventures, but please, please please, let me walk around the decks of my ship. Even if it doesn't DO anything.
They have real potential to combine the 'personal housing' element of MMOs with your ship very easily.

Actually, the first video released showed footage of phaser battles on the bridge. Plus, Cryptic has already talked a good amount about customization options for the interior of player ships. What would be the point of that if they weren't going to let us wander around? I think we'll see plenty of inside areas.

I wasn't sure if that phaser battle was just an instance on an NPC enemy ship or not. Still, if they let us wander our ships, consider me on board. Heh. Get it? On board?
Seriously though. I think this game should do just fine, even if Cryptic sticks to their gameplay formula and the Star Trek canon without much innovation, they'd make it work.
