Of course they have choices and options. Squenix could start offering incentives beyond a "free transfer", such as exclusive in-game items for those who take advantage of the transfer. To force your player base to transfer, however, is asinine. They will lose players and I am sure that is not what they want.

Here's an option you self-righteous fucks of a dev team:

Expand the fucking servers!

I swear day after day this dev team finds new and more interesting ways to be the most inept team of dipshits that have ever created a million+ seller

Just what I was going to write:
increase the server capacity. money wise it can't make a big difference with 1 big server versus 2 standard servers. plus you keep your customers.

I'm not familer w/ FF, but I'd be pissed if I was told "Tough shit. You're moved".

Do they offer guilds to move? Or like others have said, IG items? IG money? Anything? Or is it -just- a "free" xfer?

I the case of WAR they were taking people off dead servers to more populated ones. So, people were happy to go. But this is the oppisote, which makes it extremely tough for people to accept w/out incentive.

Expansion is just not an option.

If you expand you have to KEEP expanding. Otherwise you have to PERMANENTLY close all character creation indefinely. Want to roll an alt? Too bad, you're out of luck. Want to have a friend that is new to the game join you on the server? Sorry, not a chance. EVER.

The real problem here is that the developers didn't take action sooner. They let it go too long. Now they need to take drastic action. The state of the game matters more than a few hundred subscriptions. They stand to lose more if they let the server continue to exist in its current state. There are supposedly ~65,000 people on that one server. Something has got to give, and if people won't move, they should make them move. Give the people forced off a free month for their trouble.

Either way, no matter how this plays out, the damage is already done.

This is a RUMOR. They stated that as an extreme option if all-else-fails, not as something they are definitely going to do. In all likelihood they won't.

In case anyone's wondering -- the image is of an anti-riot police force in Peru.

More on that at these links:

http://shemuses.net/2007/07/29/alarming-armour/

and

http://gizmodo.com/352266/peruvian-anti+riot-police-uniforms-look-like-judge-dredd-meets-batman

What can I say? It just called out to me.

And on the post itself -- as far as I know they've not implemented the forced server moves yet, just stated that this is where the situation has brought them... the writing is on the wall.

If any Final Fantasy XI players have found themselves deported from Odin, please sound off in the comments here. Thanks.

Holy Crap... LOL

I thought it was a bunch of action figures or something. That's some scary riot suits. I love the way they look.

This happen because people complained that you couldn't pick your servers. They kept them even but they changed it to make people happy. Now one of them is over-populated and you all are surprised? Odin players should take the free pass and go to a different server like Bahamut, Alexander or Ifrit. Expanding the servers would take a few days of maintenance and god forbid if the game was down for 3 or 4 days.
