One editorial addendum, the visuals for the Lord of the Rings movies were very much inspired by the libraries of paintings by John Howe and Ted Nasmith. Entire scenes were shot to depict the imagery in these paintings. So while the movies definitely deserve their share of credit and exposure, I don't think they deserve the credit for the foundation of the visual aesthetic.

Check out a galleries. Some of them are quite impressive (some predating the movies by 20 years or more)

I'm not sure if Turbine has the rights to publish anything related to Lord of the Rings Online. Even though they've added a lot of original lore to the license with the recent Mines of Moria expansion, I don't think they can make any novelizations.
