It didn't surprise us when Square Enix said that the "Return Home to Vana'diel" campaign was back by "popular demand" -- old subscribers demanding access to deleted characters must be a fairly popular query for their customer service team to handle. Complaining about the policy won't do much good though, as it seems to be here to stay. In other words, if you've at all considered returning to FFXI in the near future, it would make sense to do it while the campaign is running.
However, MMOs are really competing for subscribers these holidays. A number of the biggest titles have just had expansions released, and others are churning out major patches to keep up. If you are someone who would benefit from this campaign (ie., you've played FFXI before but have been un-subscribed long enough to lose your characters, and could now recover them), do you see yourself taking this opportunity before it goes away in April of next year, or are you currently too wrapped up in one of the other MMOs out there?

Currently wrapped up playing WoW. If FFXI gave us some free time with the Return to Vanadeil I'd definitely give it a shot....

I can't believe they haven't changed the system so your characters are persistent even if your unsubscribed, square enix are years behind in customer relations, mechanics and game play.

Well I have been a subscriber to FFXI - in the sense that I enter subscription details to access the time that game with my game purchase - but NO campaign would ever bring me back to that game.

I played it quite hardcore for awhile as a White Mage and have moved on to other games that allow you to actually solo and *gasp* jump. Yes, not being able to jump bugged me that much.

The return home to vanadiel campaign is nothing but smoke being blown up the asses of people who don't care?
Who knows about the campaign? While the people who keep up to date on FFXI of course? Who does that? While all the people who play FFXI of course... wait a minute.. *scratches head*
Oh! Those people will tell their friends about all the great features and rewards for returning to the game, right? ... No rewards? *scratches head*
Well.. they'll get a nice discount on a 3 month subscription or something right...? .... No...?
So... what's the point?

My problem is that when you want to return, you have to remember all the ridiculous login information that only FFXI and PlayOnline use. You're POL number, etc. If I left a game months ago, why would I have that stored in a safe place?
The game really goes out of the way to make things inconvenient. It's really remarkable.

I came back during Welcome home last year... just beacuse i missed having a PvE challenge in my mmo career (meaning: I don't like WoW, didn't quite like WAR[because it was too much like WoW], and didn't quite click[prolly cause of the bugs] with AoC), when you come back you get a 10 times use 100% exp increase ring... so it's not entirely blank of benefits :-P This is more aimed at those of us who see it and remember what FFXI is, and then look at what MMOs we're playing and yearn back for Vanadiel, not those that have moved onto simpler modern EQ-style(wow) MMOs. (excluding some other games like NavyField, EVE, SGalaxy, etc.), of which FFXI is not a part of. Some of us like the feeling of teamwork and tactics that goes along with the game, and the inability to solo is actually nice, as all roadblocks don't feel like speedbumps, but actual walls that must be surpassed with the help of your fellow players. Plus the whole multi-lingual thing is a feature i'd been wanting in other MMOs i play (i'm not exclusive to FFXI)..anyways
The interesting thing I found last year when I was coming back is there where a decent amount of us coming back and re-learning new content at once so it provided for a nice 'community' of returnees, so it's not entirely a bad idea... just my two cents as someone that took up the offer, flame all you want.

Don't forget their arcane business practice of screwing you out of part of a monthly fee. Unless they changed it you have to renew on whatever your billing date day was or you lose time. Renew the day before your billing day and you pay a whole month for one days play time. Renew ten days before and you get ten days play for a months fee.

No campaign would bring me back. A sequel that's more solo/have-a-social-life friendly would get me to try it. It would have to put up a good fight against Moria, though. :P
