SW:TOR as most wanted, ok. But the runner up is DCUO? Really? I'd like for you all to actually watch the in-game trailers please.

Earthrise, SG:W, Champions Online, Star Trek online... and you pick DCUO? Smed must have a knife to your mama's neck.

The rest of the list is legit. Except maybe the CoH pick as "most improved". Persoanlly, I felt '08 was it's worst year in a while. '07 I'd give them most improved.

This is not so much news as a Wikipedia entry. While this might have been a great year for MMORPGs, as you say, that honestly makes me wonder because this list is not revealing, shocking, or impressive in any way.

It's not a slight at the writing or selections. I just wonder if something like this is even necessary in a genre like MMORPGs. There are 1, perhaps 2 major releases a year and the 'best' game outsrips the runner up in subscriptions by (D20 math check?) 14:1, roughly.

The only thing on here that surprised me was that you didn't bother pulling the punch on Age of Conan by giving the runner up 2008 MMO to something nobody has ever heard of. Which I'm now going to go check out.

Hah, WoW being the favorite MMO of 2008? How very sad, and how very lazy of the Massively staff. Scared they'll loose all the WoW fanboy readers? Because if you look at BC and WOTLK expansions you can hardly tell the difference. So why did a game that only sells more of the same gray pile of sludge to it's enslaved player crowd win? I'm all ears.

It's a shame to see LOTRO get so massively shafted by massively.

More people playing/fans does not = superior. With that logic NSYNC is better than Dream Theater, which would be one of the most musically preposterous statements imaginable.

My assumption was simply that this meant more of the Massively staff played the game and thus more people voted for it... And part of the reason why more Massively staff members play WoW is simply because more people play WoW in general.

I was glad to see it get mentioned at all. I have a feeling it will be far less rewarded elsewhere.

I agree with pretty much all the choices. Although the reasoning behind Moria vs Wrath was pretty weak. Interesting to see EQ2 wasn't mentioned at all. Turbine should be really proud of LotRO though. I really want to play LotRO once I get bored of Wrath.

Yeah, not meaning to sound like some whining LOTRO fanboy (although I'm sure most will label me as such) but WoW winning everything is the easy, lazy option. And the popular = good thing isn't a good way to justify anything.

Also, why not make the awards more interesting? It's all a bit stale "Game of the Year, Most Improved," etc. What about "Best Quest Line" "Best Item" "Most Fun Class" "Greatest Moment" and so on?

Damnit, I wish I had an edit function.

It reminds me of another site that reviewed LOTRO and WoW and gave WoW a higher score because LOTRO "didn't innovate." Okay... And then Lich King got a higher score than Moria because "Mines of Moria didn't add anything new to the MMO genre."

Excuse me?

"So why didn't Moria win top spot, if it's really that good? There are a variety of reasons, but the simple fact is that more people play World of Warcraft."

As a quite new reader to this seemingly trustworthy site I was really shocked to see such an argument to prefer a game over another. This is really good case of bad and lazy "blog journalism". Please reboot, Massively, or at least fix yourself.

I can't believe you guys did not mention AoC once in all of your awards. I have come to realize that you are in fact biased, not only in your coverage but your opinion as well. I am going to boycott this blog, I thought you guys had a good thing going but I can see there isn't anything else useful for me to read.

Goodbye Massively.

The fact that you gave some unknown MMO runner up for second best MMO of the year means you have no idea what you're talking about and in fact you probably haven't even played the games that you cover.

This blog is a sham.

The fact that EVE isn't anywhere on the list is preposterous.

At least make a Best MMO Studio award and reward it to CCP.
