Winner: Warhammer Online (writeup by William Dobson)
The hype-o-meter was off the charts just prior to Warhammer Online's release this year, and when the game finally did come out, gamers found it to be a refreshing change of pace at the same time as being a heck of a lot of fun. Unlike so many other MMOs out there, WAR allows you to get into the meat of the game right from level one if you so choose.
And what is that meat? Player versus Player combat, or Realm versus Realm (RvR) in this case. With the option to join a queue for an instanced scenario battle from anywhere in the game, and open RvR battlefields located in every tier, bloodshed is always just a short step away. The distinction between PvP and RvR is made extremely clear in WAR.
Class balance is not based on 1v1 battles, but rather, group-versus-group combat. The underlying goal of all the factional warfare is to siege keeps and capture territories, which is intended to require the co-operation of larger groups of players, and is reminiscent of Mythic's older and much-loved MMO Dark Age of Camelot. The ultimate glory in WAR is to have the chance to pillage the opposing realm's capital city, loot their dungeons and kill their king – sounds exciting just reading about it, right?
Even if you look past the RvR aspect of the game, WAR still brings a lot to the table: Public Quests, which give players a new way of coming together to accomplish PvE goals; the production values and the way the world of Warhammer is brought to life; the Tome of Knowledge, which provides little incentives to achieve things in all areas of the game, and offers detailed lore.
Troubled, perhaps. Flawed, for sure. But with a team dedicated to improvements and a fantastic new spin on the fantasy standard, everything comes together amazingly well in Warhammer Online. It's no wonder at all that it is our favorite new game of 2008.Runner-Up: Mabinogi (writeup by Tateru Nino)
For those of you that like just a little less darkness, noir, grime and greenskins in your MMOG fare, there's Nexon's Mabinogi. It's homey, cel-shaded graphics and manga artistic stylings have a lot to recommend it as a change on the eyes, without tearing down the rather overdone anime styles of (say) Lineage II.
Conversations with NPCs are more involved than your usual MMO fare (rather like our primary pick, Warhammer), with a keyword system that allows you to quiz various NPCs about various topics -- once you've become aware of it yourself. NPCs respond to your conversational sallies and may like or dislike you as a result, which has an effect on your dealings with them in other ways.
Crafting is rather more involved than the usual sort of "have all the stuff in inventory, then press the button", and crafting attempts may be less than successful, depending on your skills. The skill system is particularly rich and likely to be one of the most unusual features of the game.
Skills must be acquired at entry-levels and then improved by both successes and failures (each skill provides a list of the things that contribute to its advancement). Skills can be advanced without completing every single advancement requirement, but there's a healthy experience bonus if you do meet them all.
Nexon's Mabinogi combines a lot of traditional mechanics with some rather offbeat and novel systems, and wraps it up in an almost soothing and pleasant package. If it weren't for all the darn gold-farmers spamming and getting in the way, and some awkwardness with the interface, we'd recommend it wholeheartedly. As it is, it's well worth checking out as our runner-up for favorite new MMO of 2008.

1.1 patch changed a lot. I find Full oRvR lakes now, I can do PQs, it's not just quests that need a little work here and there, with a crap ton of Scenarios.
I've actually found myself needing to go back and do a little questing now due to my renoun getting(and staying so far ahead) there are always large warbands running around to join. The Past 3 nights I've been able to oRvR take keeps, and manage to do all the lairs in the tier I was in.
I feel bad for some of you guys who left prematurely. Despite an unpolished launch, the game only keeps getting better.

"Class balance is not based on 1v1 battles, but rather, group-versus-group combat."
I think Mr. Dobson has been reading the Mythic press releases.
Warhammer is a great game and has a lot of potential. They've done their best to clear up many of the early problems with game mechanics. They have also listened to the players when it comes to RVR.
The problem, and it goes back to the quoted comments from the article. Mythic has chosen the Nerf Bat to fix many of the balancing problems. I don't care of the game is not based on 1 vs 1 combat or not. People are not going play if their R40 gets nerfed into the ground. They are not going to play if their character is nerfed so it can't compete 1 vs 1 against equal level combatants.
I think it's a great game. But it has lost many people and will lose many more if they continue to swing the Nerf Bat to fix problems. Warhammer will end up just another mediocre MMO like so many others.

Mabinogi scores so well? It is "hot" by way of Korean games, but only insofar as the pervasive micro-transaction cash-shop gameplay and grind-orientation keeps players coming back like gambling junkies glued to a slot machine...

...the above article goes a long way in describing other grindy-cash-shop games (Rising Force Online comes to mind) but it really does underscore how they are designed as addictive cash-cows.
We are all free to vote with our own time and money what we choose to play, but being straightforward about how certain games are by-design is important.

Mostly, I haven't even really noticed the micro-transaction aspect to it. Having plenty of fun playing it for free.
Actually, it's kind of nice knowing I *could* get some of those extras if I wanted them - and that I'm not paying for content I don't want.
All the darned gold-farmers though. Ugh. They're really quite intrusive.

WAR is indeed a very good game, though all of the mag reviews forget to do one thing, look at the long run of the game. This is WAR... it's not what many had hoped for, being (Warhammer Online). Mythic did a fairly decent job with the Destruction side (Likely because they knew it would be the most popular) but the left the Order side of the game about half done. Many classes have incomplete skills trees, improperly functioning skills / or skills that are nothing at all like what they describe them to do. The realm in general is like a lazily slapped together rip-off of Albion which never really felt complete any ways but Order zones are even less so. Getting up to R (level) 40 is far too easy, many players did it in the initial two weeks, some in the first day or two. Getting past 30 starts to become endless hours of standing around in qeue waiting for an oRvR event. 1v1 (Which is a big part of the game on some servers) balance is a serious issue. They really seem to only want to pay attention to Destruction players when it comes to class and class balance issues.
Lore is very left behind on some of the classes over all, other than names of the classes themselves.
Yes the game is geared towards oRvR but there is only so much of that that can happen, the game needs a ton more content when it comes to PvE, Quests, Storyline, Ambiance, Mood, and many other niceties that so many other games have.
War has the potential to take and keep top tier, but it's only about 1/3 of the game it needs to be to take that spot and hold it.

March 13th.
Warhammer is riddled with so many bugs and problems that it is unplayable. If you need proof, check out teh official forums where all you read are complaints. The Patch 1.2 made the game terrible. 66% of servers ar closing. Major issues with unbalnced character classes are now a problem. If you want to play a game that has no real point in ORvR(pvp) go for it.
This is not a rant but rather the way it is. Read the forums. Read Marc Jacobs attempt to justify why the game is a failure.
They are now offering REsubscribers 10 free days and in game items - so you can buy virtual items with cash.
The ODER real wins across all servers due to unfair advantages, The Bright WIzard has an exploit that has turned the Mdps aspect of War into ... welll she is broken.
Tier 4 is a waste of your time and even on the most populated Dark Crag server, there are not many online - just check out the Auction House and the main cities which are never very full.
To win all you need to do is log on after midnight and then flip an area which then just gets flipped back. Pointless? Yes.
Winning in pvp/ OrVR = whoever has more people wins or if nobidy is around just take it over. RInse repeat. Wait a bit till they flip it and do it again. It is really tragic. But again go read the forums.
