I understood almost none of the detailed stuff, but I caught the theme that this news = good.

I'm always surprised that previous MMO engine advances - such as Guild Wars background download technology - haven't caught on, and this HeroEngine malarky sounds like a step up on previous advances.

It's not surprising in the least if you've been following news of Hero's Journey (or at least the engine). BioWare licensed the engine well over a year ago, and it was speculated even then that they were making a KotOR MMORPG.

At any rate, it seems like there's going to be multiple games using the engine out before the one developed by its parent company. Again, nothing new if you've followed Simutronics long enough.

Old news.

I believe there was a discussion up about SW:TOR's usage of this engine on some forum awhile back.
Belive it was FoH, but not quite sure now.

Indeed. This is about 3 years old news. They used "Bioware uses us!" type of promo in the HeroEngine info site by that time, but I think they took it down for some reason.

Anyway, we can expect SWTOR to be heavily instanced, as Hero Engine isn't built for seamless worlds alla WoW, if I remember correctly.

Oh gosh... this sets up so many nostalgic memories of OLC (On-Line Creation, essentially the same concept) in SWR-based MUDs back in the day... (And others, but SWR seems particularly apropos.) Glad to see that kind of technology is making its way into MMO development - it really is a godsend when used well. Anything that gets SWtoR out faster...
