I think I'd say DDO takes the cake for MMO co-op. Simply because it's pretty much required, and DDO essentially plays like a co-op game with a massive hub.

I think the article is probably accurate in regards to postulating that SWTOR is going to be more of a co-op multiplayer game than a true MMORPG.

However, in my opinion, this is not 'innovation' as much as it is capitalism, simply because they're going to charge MMORPG subscription rates for what is, in effect, the multiplayer mode of a single player RPG. This has long been the holy grail for these gaming executives: recurring revenue, and I'm surprised that no one in the gaming press has put this question to Bioware.

Their shiny marketing-speak trumpeting story is all well and good, but at the end of the day, if we're all paying $15.00 a month for a glorified version of KOTOR 3, I think Bioware and EA will be having the last laugh, and I really hope people are smart enough to not buy into the recurring revenue for single player games model currently being espoused by Rock Star and other development houses.

Well, I'd just like to point out that:

A.) We don't know the payment model yet

B.) It's still going to have all the MMO services, and BioWare was clear to point out that the content level going into SWTOR is more like KOTOR 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc.

So we'll see. I really don't think we should already be talking as if there's a $15 a month fee and the same amount of content as what KOTOR 3 would have had. Until the product is in our hands, it's impossible to make any sort of judgement call.

Give me a break dude. This isn't some grand conspiracy by EA and Bioware to get over on us. They are giving people what they want. I want SWTOR and I'm happy they are giving it to me. I'm not being fooled or screwed over by anyone, because I'm getting what "I" want! So turn down the "big corporation conspiracy" drama, because it's B.S. I love the concept of TOR and I will happily pay to play it.

True, they haven't released the payment model yet (to be honest they haven't released much information of substance at all, hence the speculation).

To your point B, where have they said its going to have all of the mmo services, and what exactly is their definition of those services? I'm not splitting hairs, I'd just really like to know if they've provided even a bare minimum feature list, because I haven't seen anything other than vague generalities about an awesome story.

I agree that we can't judge until we've played it, but I fear that one of these studios is going to up the subscription ante on what amounts to a single player game with a chat room, and because of all the fanboy goodwill towards Bioware and the underlying IP, this game would seem a golden opportunity for them to try something like that. I hope I'm wrong, but reading between the lines of everything that's been said about this game so far isn't doing anything to disprove my hypothesis.

I am inclined to this that you may be right I'm REALLY not buying into the hype about "OMG Star Wars MMO with incredible plot awsomeness"

It dose sound a bit like a Co-op Halo or Gears of War type at this time but who know if there will actually BE any story.
Developers can and will say whatever they want. If all the hype thats been put out recently was true:
1. World of Warcraft would be begging for mercy as Age of Conan trompled all over it.
2. Warhammer Online would be about "Open RVR"
3. Tabula Rasa would NOT be closing down and would be an AAA title.
4. Lotro would ACTUALLY have a story line HALF based on the books.

When it is delivered THEN they can talk. I really doubt it will be as good as they say. I hope it is but somehow I really doubt it.

It just sounds like you people aren't sure what an MMO does, and what they can do. If they do anything even remotely different from the current crop of MMOs, suddenly they're doing a multiplayer SRPG, which is a waste of a monthly fee. They can still add new content post-launch. Content involving other players. Just because BioWare did single-player RPGs before this, and are focusing on the story with this one, doesn't mean it's just a single-player RPG with a monthly fee.

And for the record Holgar, LotRO is based on the books entirely. Even the side-areas like Fornost and Eregion are based on things from the appendixes at the least. It helps that JRRT filled the appendixes with side-info about Middle-Earth, which LotRO can use to their fullest.

@seare:

No one said it was a conspiracy, genius, only that they're very reluctant to give out real information. Ultimately, that doesn't matter to unthinking fanboys like yourself, who will lap up whatever is spoon-fed to them because it says Bioware and Star Wars on the box.

For those who care to look deeper however, it could turn out to be an interesting, and not altogether positive, industry shift.

Time will tell.
