Apparently, we're in beta season as yet another independent MMO has announced its open beta. A Tale in the Desert IV will open its beta doors tomorrow, December 6 at 2pm Eastern to all players who are interested in giving this Ancient Egyptian MMO a shot.
If you're unaware of A Tale in the Desert, it's a social MMO that boasts no combat system at all. Its main focuses are actually a strong social structure and economics. The game first released in February of 2003 and this beta marks its fourth "telling", which acts as a major update or version of the game. Head on over to the official website for more information and to apply for your own open beta key.

I played ATITD 1. It's endless crafting, which is good or bad depending on who you are.

lol... this looks like something that was on the N64... It looks terrible, who would waste their time playing a game that looked this bad?

Hmmm well after reading obscure game information, on their website, it sounds a bit intriguing. I don't need swords and kills and levels to be interested in a game, however with a game as complex (or open) as this one appears on the surface I don't think giving me a 24 hour period to try it out and then charging me $13.95 a month to play is even close to generating enough of my interest to even bother with downloading and setting up the client.
When you consider how much content Wrath of the Lich King delivers for $15 a month (sure after you buy the game) and how many well made F2P games there are out there, it really is completely out of touch with reality to expect a large market to even try out your game, yet along subscribe.
These devs have been under a rock for the past 7 years I think. Well, maybe after 8 months or so when they have to reconsider their revenue model and either substantially lower their sub rate or convert to F2P I might give it a whirl then...

Note that while this costs $14 bucks a month, you don't have to pay for the client. For the first month, Lich King costs $40-$60 bucks, depending on how much you pay for the box.
If you want to TRY nearly any MMO, you are down $60. Sure some of them implement free demos... but not so much anymore ever since spammers started using those for 2 for 1 specials.
This MMO has no box cost, so it is about 1/6 the cost to try.
I'm not even a fucking subscriber. Don't talk about poor business practice when the entire MMO market makes you pay until it hurts.

the 24 hour trial is GAME TIME, not real time. That's more of a trial than I would personally get out of the industry standard 7 day real time trial, most weeks. Of course, ymmv.

Well that does make a big difference and re-reading the small blurb about it on their home page I can see how I mis interpreted it. Thanks for the clarification. I'm still not sure I would pay 13.95 a month for it but at least it would be worth downloading to try it out.
