EVE has it's own version of The Grind, but the term is more easily associated with high fantasy genre MMOs because they are all based on avatar levels, as stated above. Since EVE's mechanics are different, the grindy aspects exist in different locations.

However, grinding in EVE has a different tinge to it. Mining, for example, can be extremely tedious for a new player in 1.0 space. However, when you get to lower sec space, you need to take a pretty sizable support crew with you, which means you might as well get several miners in the group to maximize your haul. You need protection from rats, and other players, and to guard the jet cans while the haulers carry the ore to the hanger (and haulers need escorts).

When you've got a real OPERATION going on like this, mining takes on a whole different sheen. The mechanics are grindy, but the experience is less so.

Don't forget piracy. I've generated some nice income by simply looting player wrecks after PvP battles. Gotta love people who fit faction mods.
