Blizzard executive Paul Sams has a lot of things to say about BioWare and Star Wars: The Old Republic in an interview with Eurogamer. And while he starts off with, "I wouldn't bet against them, that's for sure." Sams doesn't stop there. He goes on to point out his reasons, stating that not many MMOs have both the strength in IP and development team that BioWare possess. He also points out the deep wallets of Electronic Arts, which will most certainly play an important role in getting Star Wars: The Old Republic just right via BioWare's "It's done when it's done" approach.
Still, Sams is quick to point out that building, running and maintaining an MMORPG is a very difficult task and that "time will tell" if the house that built KOTOR is able to react to the various situations that can erupt. A perfect example of this would be the server issues World of Warcraft has been facing for the past couple of days. Will BioWare be up to a job of that magnitude? Well, Sams is right, only time will tell.

If anyone can do it it's Bioware, and the market is ripe for a AAA sci-fi MMO. The fact that it's based on Star Wars is a secondary benefit. Personally I feel they would have been better off with a Mass Effect MMO, but I'm still excited for SWTOR as I have great faith in Bioware as a developer.
Like Blizzard, they make good games. Unlike Blizzard, they have years of mistakes by other companies to learn from and, hopefully, less desire to make a grind fest.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Star Wars...it could turn out really good or it could be very tragic..I'm thinking Bioware will know their stuff...as long as EA stays out of the process. If EA gets in there (can you say Micro-transactions)...it'll suck!

So what happens if the Bioware MMO becomes a huge hit. You shut down the abortion known as Star Wars Galaxies, right?

The people that still play SWG aren't all going to move over. I'd be surprised if more than 20% move. People that stick around in a dead MMO that long will probably stay there until it closes. They are there for their community, and not really the type that goes MMO hunting (generalization I suppose, but it's what I've observed).

If 20% of SWG subs left, they'd probably drop below the minimum to run the game and turn any profit.
Having a small, but deidcated playerbase works if they stay. But, when you're already at low numbers, losing 20% is devastating.
(these are assumptions though)
If they merged servers, they might not see that big of a drop off.

One can only hope they listen to what customers want and combine that with great customer service and keep to their storyline.................but hey, that's asking to much of developers today.

SWG already has server merges coming early next year, and a LOT of players have expressed interest in jumping ship to SWTOR.
Some of the other hardcore roleplayers will stick with SWG because SWTOR likely will not have the same customization support. At least, they'll stick with it as long as the game is running.
So, will the last person playing SWG please turn off the lights?
