Interesting article. Made me think of when a player in EVE Online finally achieves the goal of becoming a Titan pilot. The person essentially lives in that ship from then on, can no longer dock, is constantly concerned that many others in the game are trying to kill them, etc...They really don't have much control over how they play the game anymore as the ship is almost always needed for logistical operations. Whereas a pilot that doesn't have a Titan can just dock up and jump into a new ship whenever they like, a Titan has more control over its pilot than the pilot has over the ship. After seeing the toll this took on many Titan pilots I decided I did not want to go down that path to flying one. I think it would be great if Frostmourne required the same kind of commitment from a player, making it something people didn't even know if they wanted or not.

This is a fantastic comparison.

Frostmourne is an Item That Starts a Quest. Clicking it equips the sword and you get a quest. Your soul is now gone, you cannot unequip Frostmourne, you're stuck with the sword and this quest to free yourself from its influence.

You're now hated with all factions, KOS for guards because they KNOW that sword and fear it. You have to follow this one quest line to incompletion to exorcise yourself of the blade. Probably some junk to do with Tirion or something along those lines.

But with Frostmourne, you can't do anything. Can't use flight paths, can't do PvP, can't enter cities without getting mowed down. That would be suitably cool, sword disappears into the Twisting Nether or the like afterwards.

I have to agree. I feel that it's one thing to kill Illidan and then come back the next day and he's there to be killed yet again. Giving a sword, that has it's own history and is an integral part in the overall lore of the game, to everyone that grinds away at Arthas cheapens its meaning in the story. You already suspend your disbelief about the fact that everyone you see is a "hero" in the game, everyone has the ability to, with a handful of friends, defeat monsters that entire armies can't win against. If I get a Massive Long Bow of Epic Tranquility, that's one thing.. but Frostmourne? Something that key to the game, even if it has an insanely low drop rate, cheapens the experience for everyone I feel. I'm already a little irked about the idea that everyone can be a Deathknight, but oh well.

Best I think, if the sword shatters and players get a 'shard of Frostmourne' that's forged into a new blade for them.

i like that idea

or it could just make baby copies of itself to infect the player base with maybe something like. if you dont use the blade after so long it infects you and cause you too infect others.

somthing like the zombie plague all over again just on a smaller scale i think if they put it in the game with no penalty then i will not be coming back to wow.

Why because that sword is a living breathing creature to make it just another sword would just kill the sword and kill the game for me.

Maybe there will be a scripted event with the Ashbringer playing some part. Maybe they cancel each other out leaving nothing on Arthas but some badges.... lol

I think the only thing we can do with Frostmourne that would retain its magic and lore, would be to lock it away or destroy it. If you let the player decide what to do with it, it could have serious consequences, but not ones that you can't come back from.

Just like the article said, Frostmourne is an arm of the Lich King. If you do end up destroying the Lich King, it would cease to be anything more than a fancy sword. Players that loot the thing off of Arthas' inanimate corpse shouldn't have anything to fear from it. If on the other hand, the spirit of Ner'zhul is not so easily purged, it could very well end up inhabiting the sword itself. In any case, I like the idea of it being destroyed in the fight.

Interesting idea. What if at some point one has to fight not Arthas but THE SWORD ITSELF?

kill arthas, the sword pops up and it turns out that it was powered by an old god, and the whole time it was puppeting arthas. after the pretty much collapse of the burning legion by the hands of the player which, as it turns out, was orchestrated the sword, which caused the lich kings betrayal so the burning legion would lose in azeroth, pissing off of sareages. the sword then uses it's influence over the lich king to goad the player into killing arthas to free its ass to go and free some old gods and itself like in the maelstrom or something all in the pursuit of getting sargeas to come back so it can hommie up with its old god pals and get some revenge on the titan, hence the next expansion.
there you go. free story.

See this is funny, i play wow myself... and this is funny why you ask well?

Remember This is a game... not real life? why go out and work and come home.. and earn money? well because its life.... The Sword itself is a sword it is part of the game regardless of what you say? because after the lich king sword they will just make something better.... like WOW Arthus sword? Don't you level up accord to the story line to it? slaying Arthus and getting his sword is part of the game... your not ecpecting to play WOW til your 80 now? and blizzard see it like that even know some of you dont have no life... the game can only stay fresh for a certain amount of time Arthus sword/ AshBringer wont be no walk in the park and if one has it no biggie i dont understand where you say stats being show? stupid who cares if it just as strong as a epic sword or just a tad stronger your not expecting 6666-6666 damage no one is really looking at it like that... Get a life move on it wow enjoy it >< and at the end of it, they can keep adding and add new stuff that sound better and better, since people do take it to heart let put a example in that might make you look at it different...

E.G.
Electric
Now if the person made electric said aye i shouldn't make electric public because it will ruin it, its ment to be or gonna be the most used thing in life, will we being posting now..

Computers.
If Bill Gates said no dont make the xbox 360 because its better then the xbox it shouldn't be realesed to the commuinty we wouldn't have as good gaming console...

This whole artical is looking at life and wow wrong if they never brought out the frostmourne it would make the story of warcraft pointless may aswel not bring out Lich King or Death knights...

Ok i am ready for the flame but before i get ready for it? please read this careful maybe again because what i say has a point regardless if you say "bla bla" this or that
