Well, I say hip-hip-hooray.

Whatever it is they do, we'll eventuall get used to it. I agree that the current interface really isn't that bad at all. The issue is what to do in-world when you've completed those initial tutorials. "How the heck do I get out of this place and where do I go?"

As long as they introduce changes gradually, a bit at a time, they will be lucky if we play the frog in the pot of water.

But no matter what Linden Lab does, there always will be the loud, shrill nay-dayers who will fight any change at all.

Easy way for LL to make the initial user experience easier:

Stop changing the UI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was helping someone new to SL last night. At one point I got asked why the pictures/description of a UI element did not match what she was seeing. I then had to explain that it was because the UI changes each time a new viewer is released.

Ah for the days of 1.18 when less things broke ....

I do not think this is a bad decision, but I think it misses the biggest issue facing new users, that of "Ok, now what?"

Second Life has become a punchline for much of the virtual world community. And doing a search for second-life related material on the web pulls up mostly old news, negative feedback, and many comments to the nature of "Nothing to do there!," "What's the point?," and the ever erudite "SL Sucks."

For those of us that enjoy SL, we know that there are many things to see and do in world, and we know how to look for them. Rather than spend too much time on signups and UI, LL needs to find ways to direct new users towards rich content. Retention rates will only improve when you give people a reason to stay.

This isn't a metaphysical journey: you need an answer ready before the user asks themselves "Why am I here?"

I have to rather shamefacedly admit that I kinda *like* the idea of Second Life being a place that mostly retains people who have the inner resources to find and/or make interesting stuff to do, without having to be taken by the hand and led to it. Maybe we could have a *different* virtual world for those latter folks? :) Or they could just keep watching TV...
