The books get more into your head and let you imagine how things are in Middle Earth, plus go more into the whole scope of the world.

The books are superior for the amount of depth and history that bring you back for multiple readings. That J.R.R. Tolkien so fully realized an imaginary world with such attention to detail and connected genealogy, and devoted much of his career to discovering and sharing Middle Earth is inspiring and IMO a work of genius.

There is so much respect the movies deserve for the amazing job PJ and Weta workshop/digital did bringing the characters, armor, weaponry, creatures and locations to the screen. If only there was an extended, extended addition...

I look forward to playing in the Mines very soon.

I like the movies better - for me I guess Hollywood delivers better than my imagination.

It's all about what you ran into first, isn't it?

The big screen is still too small for my imagination.
So, still, the books. Worn, covers split, sand from the beach still embedded in them.

LOTR Movies were pretty impressive... There are the only movies that I've seen more than once:))

I haven't read the book, but people say that it's full of lengthy landscape descriptions....

I preferred the movies. There was no half the story hidden int he appenicies for the movies.

I loved the movies, but nothing can stand up to the books. The way Tolkein writes just paints a perfect picture of his fantasy world of Middle Earth. I even read the Silmarillion which, while it was a bit wordy, provided some good background on the world of Middle Earth.

I'd have to say the books were better. The movies were good, and fairly true to the story, but the books just beat them hands down.

The books. This was the series that really got me into reading. Such a rich world and engaging story.

The movies were an excellent example of how to do a movie based on a book right though. I sure did feel disappointed by them leaving out the whole part where they saved the shire from Saruman at the end though.

I loved the way the books put more details into light, but some of that stuff would have just been boring for the movie. It's basically a tie depending on how much time I have.

Books vs Game vs Movie though? LotRO wins hands down.

The book hands down.

While the Jackson films were great fantasy movies, they were an atrocious adaptation of the book. He and his writers completely changed many themes, battles and characters and glorified Elves through the roof and made Dwarves nothing but comic relief.

The book is infinitely better.

The movies!

When I read the books I had this visual image in my mind of how Middle Earth looked and felt. Peter Jackson and his team did a STUPENDOUS job. It felt like I was re-reading the books all over but with not as much time taken up. It's like hitting all the "high points" of the books. Granted it's JRR Tolkien's vision, but brought to reality for all to see!

I'd say the movies. Read the books a half dozen times, and I still can't remember the names of the thousand plus characters mentioned. As someone else said, the books are cliff notes. And, as I'm not a big fan of the genre (MMOs aside), that's alright with me.

Only started reading the books recently, the movies have an epic scale that I have not seen replicated with such drama in any other movies. So I would go with movies, simply because of the use of the medium

Definitely the books. The movies did a handful of moments well, but the books have more depth.

Also, poor Turbine, this content has lots of prizes and comparatively few entries compared to the other ones here @ Massively. Guess they can't even give their expansion away on the week after Wrath launches.
