Ready! Set! Grind!
The folks at Xfire have announced a 2-day extension to their "Race to 80" contest for the upcoming World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. This contest will reward the first player to hit level 80 in Blizzard's newest WoW expansion, with a high-end gaming PC as the grand prize.
Haven't heard of this contest yet? Head on over to their official rules page to check out all the info you'll need and register before tomorrow for a chance at the grand prize. Not only will this be an exciting event for the contestants, but Xfire members will actually be able to watch the race, listen to the shoutcast and discuss the race in their dedicated chat rooms as it all unfolds.

Encouraging powerleveling for MMOs to get to end-game the fastest is what's wrong with this genre. There's (usually) alot of content in the between levels going up that players should explore and enjoy instead of passing by.
Of course, this is a WoW product, so it's obvious that they pushed it all around the idea that "the game doesn't start until 80" just like they did with 60 in the original and 70 in the first expansion.
Still must say that even for any game, it still should not be a singular focus to grind your way past everything just to get to the end-game.

Luckily, Blizzard removed the achievements for first 80 on server, first class to 80, and first race to 80 from the Feats of Strength but people are going to try and push it.

Some people enjoy speed leveling and see it as a challenge. There's one guy(who I can't remember the name of right now) that likes to go onto any new server and try to be the first to 70(which he usually does), he's put out a guide to do it too. For someone like that experiencing the content is what an alt is for =P

The people that will make it anywhere near 1st will have at least one other 70 alt they need to level anyway. They can decide to PL him or actually play through it, their choice.

Yeah that'd be why all the beta testers are reporting that WotLK's levelling content is the best stuff Blizzard have ever done in WoW.
