I suppose some of it will be finding a weapon you like the look of and then customizing it from there... but being able to pick from a bunch of designs if you're forging a sword, for example, would definitely have been cool.

Isnt this similar to asherons call? with all the mods, scavenging (i know they call it something else) etc? Asherons call has an extensive armor/wep mod system, this sounded something like it.

I've not played AC, but they're from the same developer... so I'd not be surprised.

I really hate how crappy the UI looks in LOTR everthing look like they was putting the ui together last minute

This isn't really new considering Dark Age of Camelot did it way before this game ever came out. But still a nice feature to have none the less...
