Daniel Erikson: "And ... story. Now this has been true in every game that's ever been done that's an RPG until we went to the MMO space. And then somehow one of these fell off the truck on the way to MMO Land and it never really got in there."

I just have to disagree here. Story definitely is there in some MMO's, not in all of them though. As the best example I definitely have to name Guild Wars, which really has a strong stroy that takes you through the world and makes the player the hero of the story. In GW this is done by heavy instancing, but I'm sure it is possible to build strong stories like this with less instances, although it's not as easy to make a player the ultimate hero when there are more other players involved.

A more recent example is Warhammer Online, where players follow a story through the different areas and tiers while they level, and all this without any instances along the way. Players are able to have a feeling of participation and importance in the world when they are slowly sent to new areas by their army commanders to lead or help troops against tougher challenges.

I appreciate it that SWTOR is trying to bring the story element of MMO's to a more significant role, but it's unfair to say that no one else has done any of that.

I agree and disagree.

I can’t comment on GW. Never played it.

But, for WAR, it’s exactly as you’ve described except, the player isn’t “the hero”. The story is magnificently written to make you feel unique, amongst a rank of other unique soldiers. But, in the end: You’re a soldier in WAR, not a hero. They made it come across swimmingly that way. I love the story in WAR, but I understand I’m not a god.

That’s where I think the real difficulty lies: How can you make every player the galaxies greatest hero? I have no clue how Bioware is going to pull that off. I have that, if any company can, it’s them, but I just don’t see how everyone is going to be the greatest Jedi ever.

I am really happy that I don't have to play as a Jedi if I don't want to choose that. It seems like the premise is about the hero's journey much like a Star Wars A New Hope, or the fall of the hero. And I like this element.

The single player RPG element has to do with how the avatar levels up and the story. It reads as if they are taking this element and moving it to the MMO space. This may translate into the game along with MMO standards. I really hope they have a space game, atmospheric flight, and some form of living quarters.

I loved GW. I played it for two years until my guild fell apart and I switched to WoW. The big, big difference I felt in WoW over GW was the story lines. In GW everything is instanced and you are almost forced at times to pay attention with what's going on in the game, where WoW I felt the story had taken a back seat to leveling/gearing up.

I'm a massive, massive fan of the Star Wars universe (though mostly the post-movies storylines over the pre-movies) and being such a huge fan, the story element and sticking to cannon will be a huge factor in whether I play this game at all, let alone subscribe for any length of time. I loved KotOR, they stuck to cannon really well and didn't overplay the jedi thing. This is a huge concern for a lot of people, however if they stick to cannon it wont be a problem. Every says "there were a TON of jedi in the old republic, so if anyone wants to be a jedi they can" but really, there weren't a lot of jedi, just more than they were post-vader. There were maybe 10-15 thousand jedi in the entire galaxy during the old republic regime, which may sound like a lot, but in reality, there are trillions, and trillions of people in the galaxy, the jedi are around .0001% of that. I don't think any players shoudl be jedi (however much everyone, including myself, wants it) they should be more like a faction that we do quests for, help out, etc...

I just hope that Bioware keeps the hardcore fans in mind. I understand that they need to make money and as such they need to make a game that is playable by people who have never seen/read starwars. However if they veer too far from that course they will lose a lot of the hardcore fans (including myself)

Who else wants a movie or a game based in the New Jedi Order era? Yuuzhan Vong ftw! I am personally getting really, really, really sick of this prequel, clone wars bull. Watching the movies and reading the novels, I always looked at the clone wars as one of the darkest times since the sith wars, and lucas absolutely disappointed me with the prequel films

I think personally this MMO will make alot more sense as a game than Galaxies. I really hate the way Galaxies seems stuck in time and bends/breaks the plot of Star Wars in order to shoe horn a game into the plot of the movies.

Galaxies was and is too much like a virtual theme park and might as well be high budget, wishful fanfiction with legions of story wrecking jedi and casual visits to Lord Vader for another imporant mission. It doesn't make sense and it pisses me off as a fan of the movies. I want to see more of the star wars universe, not live as some faux Luke Skywalker in the same rehashed locations.
