Diablo would be a good one, but don't know if it has enough lore. Then again, Blizzard can just make it up as they normally do with everything else.

if it is part sci fi, I'd make a strong guess towards it being Starcraft Universe.

I promise it is not going to be Starcraft Online. Not that it wouldn't be cool - just not going to happen yet.

It is going to be a new IP. Yeah, how crazy is that!

Can Acti-Blizz create a next-gen MMO? The term Next-Gen carries the implication of creativity. We know Blizz is capable of copying others and themselves in the MMORPG genera... can they actual create?

DO NOT tell me WoW was some kind of creative genius or was innovative. It was not. The lore from the Warcraft franchise was adapted from WFB and the mechanics were absolutely not original. So, it is my jaded opinion that we cannot possibly know what the next MMORPG Acti-Blizz will generate is because there are no true next-gen MMORPGS on the market yet... they have nothing to copy.

MrGutts, can you tell me why you think Diablo should be considered for MMORPG development when Diablo 2 is already on the table?

ScytheNoire, I agree, consoles are the big thing for MMORPG studios to comment on or declare they are creating for. But, in the end, that platform will be abandoned to reassert the PC as a platform and then to address yet-to-be-invented connective mobile devices. Cell phones of any stripe are piss poor devices to even be contemplating as a MMORPG platform. Even bringing them up as a potential at this stage is a sign of a lack of innovativeness and creativity.

Okay, fan-bois, there is your bait...

I think a basic thing could be to look at design basics that Blizzard tend to follow and commercial trends

1. Blizzard seem to favor non-realistic (high fantasy) worlds
2. Fantasy always sell better than sci-fi
3. The target audience is likely broad (WoW)
4. FFA does not appear to interest Blizzard but PvP very likely to be a part
5. Graphic style probably cartoon-ish (colorful, varied)
6. Blizzard brand strong enough for new IP
7. Blizzard appear to like looming evil threats
8. Given WoW appeal, seamless world rather than instanced
9. XP/Level base

I also hope it is something NEW. While I never played StarCraft it seems like a possibility. Even if it were the old mechanics it would be different enough to draw a huge audience.

With the upcoming release of D3, I don't really want to see a D3 MMO. At one point I thought that would be good but I want D3 to be D3.

Could we live with and enjoy another high fantasy MMO? Absolutely, if it is good enough. I do agree with a previous poster that this tag of "next gen" has become a sales pitch sound bite instead of meaning what it's supposed to...a NEW product evolved from the old.

Fantasy MMO's are getting a bit on the bland side, more keeps coming out, either failing or needing more time.

none the less a Fantasy MMO needs to live up the higher standards while as of now a Sci fi MMO would give some more slack.

What this genra needs is some fresh blood and sci fi allows for more things to happen. In starcraft the game would have to be some hybrid between WoW/Tabula Rasa (strictly the way you shoot and spells ect) / Planetside (large world taking objectives for your side always fighting ect)

Could you imagine a MMORPGFPS Raid? No tanks, or run of the mill healers. It would be based off of tactics and distracting the monster doing things at dif stages, possibly having some kind of traping class instead of tanking. ect

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

I am going to predict an environment similar to second life, where you can be and do anything.

That would be neat, but I hope it would still be a game, not just a sandbox. SL taught me that I need goals and constraints in the environment. SL was too open for me. I kind of need that "box" to shape my experience and give me something to work towards. That's just me, anyway.

They definitely indicated it was going to be something unusual, a serious departure from what they've done so far. During on Q&A session at Blizzcon they said whimsically it was going to be starcraft meets warcraft. This might have been just rumor-baiting, or it may have been actually a direction they're going in. Either way, it seems like they're cooking up something exciting and new.

Part sci-fi, fantasy, and historical? If it isn't an original IP, it can only be Lost Vikings!

From Wikipedia:
"In the game, the three Vikings get kidnapped by Tomator, an extraterrestrial emperor of the Croutonian empire, for an inter-galactic zoo and become lost in various periods of time. The purpose of the game is to control the three characters (who all have separate abilities) in order to solve puzzles to escape and get back home."

So what IP will Blizzard steal from for their next game? A lot of the good ones have already been used, so Blizzard should steal quickly.
