I do a LOT of research when seeking out a new guild. Typically I just exist guildless on a server, and wait to see if the friends I make happen to all be from the same guild. If so, I join where they happen to be. If not, I'll sit down and make a list of everything I expect to get out of a guild, then look for guilds that include that information on their website. If their website also has a webforum, I'll lurk on there for at least a few days, and in some cases, a few weeks, before deciding to apply or not. Doing this, I've found what I believe to be two of the most awesome guilds I have ever been in. Warhammer Online -> Phoenix Throne -> Wolves of War

As far as the relationships stemming from friendships built within guilds, as a raid leader and main tank heavily involved in growing and administering the guild, I met my fiance in guild. Originally we raided together, and she started speaking with me regarding the night's events and strategies post raid. It grew from that into an offline chat conversation, then to the phone, then to our real life meeting. From there our relationship has flourished... and I really didn't expect that my future wife would arise from my game playing habits. Sometimes life throws a curveball at ya. :)
