Another thing that can cause local lag, your PCs temperature. SL makes considerable demands on your hardware, which can warm up quite a bit. Sometimes to protect itself, the hardware will slow down. With my own laptop, if the room temperature gets warm, lag increases, and a friend of mine reduced his lag by fitting a second fan. So check your fans are clean and unobstructed, and consider adding another fan.
