This article was so well written that I created an account to comment!

The things you pointed out are what I have told my WoW friends about WAR, almost verbatim. Mythic took all of the right things from WoW, added things of their own and really made the game their own.

Its win, win as it gives players a familiar feel they are comfortable with while throwing in new things. Quite a refreshing experience.

I'm not a fan of WoW... I unsubbed a long time ago. However, after reading this I have decided to take the plunge into this game.

Excellent write-up!

I think this is a highly insightful article in helping WoW's player base to branch out to the wider world of MMO's. Very well written.

Very nice write-up. My only problem is my laptop only has a 64mb video card and WAR requires 128mb. I even spent the $1 on the pre-release pack and have an open beta acct. Too bad I can't use it and see how wonderful it is/isn't. I couldn't find the system specs before I had trouble and they directed me to the list. Believe me, I looked. :(

nice article, but I would argue that the evil faction isn't necessarily evil...From a modern human standpoint, yes, we don't like what they're doing. But you can't consider an owl evil for killing cute little mice. Same with orcs; they may fight and kill and that's all, but that's what they are. They don't have some insidious plot or nefarious motive, they are just acting at a very base level, and it happens to conflict with a human's worldview.

The dark elves are indeed messed up, but from their viewpoint, it makes sense. Who they view as the rightful heir to the throne (and it can be pretty well argued that he IS the rightful heir) was banished for trying to take his birthright. Also, all the killing and such? It is for their God of Murder, who unlike many earthy gods, actually influences the elves and is a pretty real presence.

Chaos aren't really evil, they just want things different. Especially since this host relies on Tzeentch, god of change, you can see why. The empire and dwarfs and whatnot like their world the way they are (and if you look at it, they're kinda messed up anyways) and the chaos hordes just want the world to be a bit different than it is. Perhaps their methods of bringing this change are frowned upon by everyone, but at least they are making an effort to do something they feel is worth doing.

That's my 2 cents.

I would say that there is no "good" in warhammer just gooder than the baby murderers, empire are religious fanatics that wants to convert everyone into following sigmar, high elfs are racist as fuck, and dwarfs are greedy drunks and their chicks looks like dudes (eww)

In passing: "Low fantasy" does *not* mean "grim and gritty," or whatever it is you're using it to mean up there. "Low fantasy" means "a world similar to, or connected to, the one we know." "High fantasy" means "A completely different world," not "Just like Lord of the Rings." The relative low/high refers to "The amount of stuff made up", not "how much people talk like J.R.R Tolkien."

As a beta tester for WAR, and an unapologetic lover of WoW, I found WAR to be good, and the PVP from the star is okay, but what I found lacking was character in the game. If you're REALLy into PVP, then go with WAR, but if you're REALLy that much into PVP, then why not go 3rd shooter? WoW is still king for me, and when WOTLK comes out, it's will be my lord and master for which I want to give my very soul...lol!

moral relativism is BAD.

dark elf are evil. they killed people whatever their will, because they don't care at all.

they want to destroy.

-
Orcs are mostly like savage animals. not "nefarious" for se, but really nasty, really violent and whatever their taste I don"t want them in my garden

-
Chaos are purely EVIL.

read the "realm of chaos" books (old books) for warhammer 40K, fantasy and battle, if you need facts

but Chaos Gods are chaos consciousness born from negative and strong feelings : anger, hate, fear, jealousy and whatever destructive ones

chaos is also sensitive to more positive ones, but humanity is full of negative feelings.
but still, and it's why, Khorn can be also about honor
Tzeentch about progress
Nurgle about joy of life

but at core, with a BIG ONE, they are all about horrible feelings

Nurgle is decay, sickness
Tzeentch is ambition, cruelty
Khorn is death, violence, hate
Slaanesh is perversity

Slaneesh is not born because of human feelings, but mostly from Eldar feeling, in the W40K lore.

Well ! Chaos armies in Warhammer, khorn or whatever chaos gods are EVIL . They want to kill, kill, erase life, they are full of hate, cannot support people, want to send souls inside their chaos master's mouth, waiting in the sea of Chaos, you can imagine.

The battle of Kislev is well told in Warhammer books : horrors and nightmares by very ugly minded horrors : daemons, chaos champions and lovers of chaos gods.

they are evil like all the word means. and it's one strength of Warhammer (if you like that) : to be really dark, really violent, really about monstrosity.

it's English. not American ;)

Great article. I haven't play WoW for almost a year now. I'm really enjoying Warhammer Online and LOTRO, more so than I did WoW. I get more involved with the lore than I did in WoW.

I still have my WoW account open. Now that WAR has been released for a few weeks, I'm satisfied that this is the game I will be playing for awhile and will probably let my WoW account go. That might be hard to do though with the expansion coming up soon.
