My guess for the next round of A/B tests: normal orientation, and orientation where all the helpers are swimsuit models!

I don't believe that LL really have any interest in new user orientation any more in any case; signs are that, as much as possible, the idea is for the whole business to be taken care of by third parties.

I believe the refer-a-friend system fails, as in, no calling cards are exchanged, if the referee happens to land on the new registration portal. Is that one of the variables in a huge multi-variable B test case?

The problem is hardly unique to Linden Labs. Every company I have ever worked at find "Elephant Hunting" much more exciting than swatting at "midges". And bagging an elephant is usually seen as much sexier and attractive than being a activities that result in the extermination of midges. This is true even if though it can be be proved that midges are the real problem in attracting and retaining customers.
