Not completely out of vogue... City of Heroes/Villains have super bases which are like that, and I'm pretty sure guild wars has guild halls. UO had it as well, as a part of the game world; its too bad more games don't do THAT.

It seems to be coming back into style. The Lord of the Rings Online added kinship halls a while back, and Age of Conan takes it a step further with guild cities.

But very few games of the past two generations of MMOs shipped with the feature, and none (save perhaps AoC, in theory) made it as central to gameplay as did Meridian 59 and other games of the 90s.

Anarchy Online has "guild halls", which are occasionally invaded by aliens.
