For a company whose product is based on communications, they communicate with their users very poorly.

At least we have massively to tell us what is going on!

We have nothing of the sort, P.K., because Tateru's shtick all along has been to say, "Linden Lab is becoming more capitalist and corporate and mainstream than I'm comfortable with, as an idealist with technolibertarian and outright socialist notions and I'm mad at the way they're doing things to sell their product, worst of all because I think it's culturally inferior and tasteless."

I totally agree the latest moves reduce communication opportunities for the residents, and have said so in my own blog posts.

But the analysis and remedy I identify are very different than Tateruo's.

First of all, the Lindens can likely afford to lose the video tutorials because they don't get enough use. Or even if they get use, there really is an oversaturation of them from Torley now, they are available on his site, and those that want to go into the higher levels of tekkie stuff like Windlight presets and tweaking can go there. Torley has his fanbase, but they don't represent the masses of SL who don't learn this way. It looks like the plan is to drive people who are necessary to some fan base or necessary in some abstract theory about "learning" to "specialist sections" of the blog. That of course drives the user expectations to see the blog or forums as merely a sterile interactive version of the Knowledge Base, which is a room-clearer.

Robin *is* engaging and vivacious and means well. But she *is* the marketing VP and they *are* selling a product, not running an eternal sandbox for the FIC and the metarati to alternately use and make money just for themselves or dump on as an inferior CAD or Maya program not enabling them to realize their potential as elite designers in the Metaverse.

It might just be that by outsourcing the forums management, the Lindens could actually be accomplishing a good thing, as the overwhelming number of problems on the forums are caused by the Lindens refusing to moderate their friends (Jeska, Pathfinder) or the Lindens' own pets refusing to moderate themselves first and foremost (Strife) and selectively moderating others. That's the inherent awfulness of a resmod system, and if the Lindens outsource that, great. Of course the downside is they may merely start randomly or too thoroughly just deleting posts that don't seem to fit, not knowing the rich lore of SL.

I think it's perfectly legitimate for the Lindens to make their blog like every other corporate flog and not have comments, and to sanitize the forums. Our job on the latter is not to make it easy for them, and to demand changes or not participate, but the argument isn't made persuasive by denying the Lindens to market and promote their product as they see fit.

Try to think of the arguments for why the Lindens should bother even to keep forums, as they are a chore without a lot of bank for their buck.

Forums allow residents to support other residents. I used to find a lot of helpful information there when searching for things. I still do occasionally.

> "Only it hasn't been. Is this a misstatement, or a reversion of the recent changes in Second Life blog policy?"

Based on Robin's past wondrous appearances what about a simple three letter word: LIE

After all, there never was anyone prevented from exhibiting at SL5B full stop.

And until the German magazine exposed it there was no Age Play (Oh that stunned mullet look is worth 1,000 words - "In my world!1!!!1!")

Robin has far more power than just marketing, she has her fingers in areas from Governance to Legal, she and her cronies have been behind every Friday Afternoon bombshell in the last few years.
