Well in EVE you really do make your own experience, which extends past just the marketplace and which is probably it's main appeal aside from theme/pvp. The part devs play shouldn't be marginalized though, there is a world and story there, it's not a total sandbox.

Total openness is kind of.. hard to get around in, generally speaking. As is EVE's way of doing things can be pretty hard to get into. But the synnergy between dev team and players is definately important and they seem to be doing well while making their own game.
