What about the Teen Grid?, will the Orientation Islands TG1 and TG2 be closed down?. And will the Help Islands in Teen Second Life be open again soon?

Teen Grid only have 2 Orietnation Islands and Help Islands, which is poor.

Nobody's said anything about the teen grid so far. I'm wondering if (a) they remember it is there and (b) have actually fixed new TG registration so that it works (it's been broken outside the USA for quite some weeks, I understand).

Thank gods they'll do something about orientation. Those "four paths" type of OI's were so bad.

I found the most recent incarnation of the OIs bewildering, and that was as a veteran. (I quite liked the Melting Dots style ones they A/B tested awhile back, which had a clear path for the early stages, followed by a space to try things out, but I gather those didn't do any better from a retention standpoint.) I'm not sure dumping people onto a somewhat revamped Help Island is really an improvement; if that were the final plan, I'd be extremely concerned. As a stopgap... you could do worse.

It's clear that the few people who managed to go through Orientation Island and arrive at the Help Islands (often by chance...) definitely don't come prepared at all — so their "orientation" hardly did anything but confuse them even more. No wonder — the orientation islands had very strange concepts like driving a bulldozer to flatten down poor animals and watch with glee at your roadkill... which I wonder what they're trying to teach (that cruelty to animals is allowed in SL, since just pixels are harmed?)...

So the few lucky new residents who managed to figure out how to reach Help Island get their first impression of SL by talking to human beings (which they find rather amusing; most expect bots and automated, guided, goal-based orientation — specially after their frustrating experience with Orientation Island).

What this means is more work for the Volunteers (since now I expect that everybody will land on one HI before teleporting to the mainland), but at least they'll be guided by people who have a clue on how to help others out (minus a bit more drama).

It's good that Linden Lab actually did their metrics and statistics and figured that their churn level was astonishingly high on the Orientation Islands. On the other hand, the worst case scenario now is having people dropping on an empty Help Island (ie. without any Volunteer to help them out...) and be at a loss at what to do next. The Help Islands have no information whatsoever, and most SL clients will be set at a too low drawing distance to allow them to see the spinning EXIT sign. So... they'll wander around, totally clueless about what to do or to expect, unless they stumble upon a friendly Volunteer by chance.

Then again, recently, the Help Islands have been pretty well staffed — at least at the hours I've managed to log in. And the Group chat for Volunteers is always requesting for help with other languages, so at least new users (hopefully) won't find the language barrier an issue (unlike the Orientation Islands, which were limited in the number of different languages they supported).

On the other hand, this means that Linden Lab can scrap all the hundreds of Orientation Islands and sell them cheap on the market ;)
