Its the one thing no MMO player wants to hear -- the news that their favorite game world -- the place where they've sunk years of time and care into a character (or host of characters) -- is being shut down. This idea actually comes to us via Matticus, who originally asked this question during an interview some time back. Others have picked up Matticus' question as well, so this morning we thought we'd ask you all what you thought.
If word came down that your favorite MMO was shutting down in five hours, which one would it be, and what would you do with your last moments in that world?

I would say 'goodbye' to the gameworld by visiting the most gorgeous places one last time.

Lots and lots of screenshots.
Of all my characters, and anything else meaningful to me, be it costume, equipment, scenic vista or whatever.
(If there were any people I'd particularly liked, exchange contacts or whatever, but likely we'd already have out-of-game means of contacting each other, through guild website or what-have-you.)
Boils down to good memories, fun folk and a way to remember them by.

This actually happened in Neocron 1. There was a massive collapse of all trade and everyone stopped grinding for rares and money and just hanged out in the city.
Popular guild and players advertised they were throwing away their collectables and uber rares into the air for anyone to take(you could throw items around in the 3d world), which caused huge crowds to gather at these spots and wait for the ruckus. Taking some of these rares myself I felt great even though it would only last a day.
Everyone had a great time and despite being somber and angry, it was a great way to just party the night away like its the end of the world :) I will always remember it as some of the most fun i've had online, the closest thing to a real mad drunk crazy party.

And the message came through "we found a new investor, we're saved!"
Now THAT would be fun..
As for the question.. nothing says goodbye like one last nekkid gnome raid..

I think if this happened in Age of Conan you'd see whole guilds meeting up in certain areas just to gank everyone on sight. If they didn't have a reputation to live up to, people would just guiltlessly attack everyone.
I can just imagine it in guild chat, someone says 'hey let's all go to Wild Lands of Zelata and gank everyone we see'. Except other guilds are doing it as well. So it would be like a giant free-for all war had just erupted, pitting every organized group of people against every other group.
So pretty much what would probably happen if it were coming to the apocalypse in the real world :)

I'd probably log in and take a lot of screenshots of all the great places. I play WoW at the moment and it has some really nice areas which are hard to get to (In Azeroth at-least) which although you know have been discovered countless times before when you visit them yourself after spending 30-40 minutes climbing up a rock face backwards it feels like you're the first to find it like an explorer. Those are all the places I'd take screenshots from.
And of course I'd be pretty angry if I had of spent years of my life involved in it. But I don't see World of Warcraft going away any time soon so I'm not worried about such an event. I friend of mine played that NCSoft game with the Cars, I can't remember its name but it was quite recent (Possibly last year?) It got closed down and he lost his Avatar in the game that he had worked hard at. And of course I feel sorry for him but at the same time its risky buying in to a new MMO.
I hope that games such as Champions Online, LOTR, AoC and the forthcoming War Hammer don't go bust. And look at EVE they are allowing players to use in-game currency to purchase game time and offset subscription costs. If I was an investor I'd be jumping ship from that about now. Digital 1's and 0's on your companies database don't pay for electricity, unless that is your running Second Life in which case yes, yes they do.

@Jam: The EVE game time paid for with in-game currency (ISK) is purchased with real world currency by the character whose account receives the ISK (they go to a website and buy a game timecode with a credit card etc, put the GTC into a secure CCP system). It's effectively letting a cash-rich person "sponsor" an ISK-rich person.
The net impact on CCP's income-per-account is zero - indeed there may be a benefit, since ISK-rich users may be more likely to run multiple accounts.

Well, in Mxo, we'd probably do what we always do...sit at Mara Central, dance, and do some pvp. Or, try and crash the servers.
