It's hard to say.

There's just so many directions that the Star Trek IP offers. But, there's also so many things that can be done wrong.

It'll be interesting at the very least to see what path Cryptic chooses for the game.

Especially knowing how demanding the IP's fan base can be.

I just wonder how you can make an STO game that caters to the hardcore ST fans, as well as the hardcore gamers, that care more about mechanics, rather then the name on the box. Should be interesting.

I would like it to be set up as much like the show as possible. I would like to be able to train and learn new things, I would like to be any member of the crew, and I would like to see the rank system handled by the game itself, making the federation (or whatever faction your in) like a giant guild, and maybe foregoing guilds all together in favor of another system where players who want to play and group together request transfer to the same starship so that they could participate in away missions together and such. At the least, I'd like to see the Federation and the Romulans as playable factions, though I would also like to have the Klingons, Ferengi, Vulcans and Cardasians as their own factions as well with the appropriate races available to each faction (notably the Federation would probably have the biggest selection of races). I also think the game should take place somewhere around TNG era, as anything before that would probably be lacking in enough content to make things fun. I would of course like to see things that took place after Voyager returned, especially because of those neat toys that were seen at the end of Voyager, but that may be too far advanced for making the game right.

I wonder if Cryptic will move the timeline on from what Perpetual chose? They planned to have the game quiet a bit in the future. Personally i think thats the best time as it will be recognizable to ST fans but also new and open enough to put in some really amazing stories and new technology.

One of the biggest things im personally looking for is the ability for a small group of players to control a ship together.

I think the quest system needs to be in place where if a starship, commanded by multiple players undertakes any quest, it is upscaled to accommodate that. You should be able to go it alone with NPC crew members but if you get players to take their place, the quests/missions should provide more of a challenge and perhaps different elements.

Its a big ask but i really want to have player controlled ships supporting single or multiple player controlled crew.

Another big one for me is the ability to see the ship from the inside. Its all well and good seeing what the ship looks like from the exterior but 90% of the shows are from inside the ships or space stations. You need to feel like you are operating a ship and i think that can only happen when you can walk about your ship if you want. Perhaps internal or external views should be supported? How about when you are at your station, you see the external view, but depending on your position/role you have your mini-game windows open showing you the controls you have etc.

So all would have external view but then the following class specific mini-game windows would open up depending on your role:
Pilot/Con - Maneuvering Systems (controls of the ship)
Security - Shield & Weapon Control (Targeting, launch systems and shield redistribution systems etc)
Command - Order Systems (think setting plans into motion, increasing crew performance and issuing special commands)
Science - Science Station (think weakening shields, increasing weapon yields etc)
Engineering - Engineering Control (think maintenance, repair and re-routing power)

Thats the sort of thing im looking for. As you progress in level i would like to see you abilities increase and new ones coming available to you. You can operate a ship on your own but you are most effective when flying with friends.

Yes! I'm not exactly how well it would play out in execution, but one of the things I've always hoped for was perhaps a "raid" style of instance where every player involved assumes a role of starship command.

So, do we all get to command our own starship, or can we all be part of a crew on one ship? How is command of the ship determined? This could be wonderfully complex, or horrendously broken, depending on implementation.

I say the ships will range from one man ships (scouts or light combat vessels and trade) to multiple player starships (Cruisers, Battleships, Warhawks etc etc.)

Most important feature: being able to make decisions about whether to support or oppose an ethical decision that determines the fate of a sentient species on some random planet, e.g. the episode "Dear Doctor."

Second most important feature: having any time-travel or "reset button" missions.

Lore-wise I'd like to see players assigned to space stations or maybe even colonies. Their first ships will be those provided by their culture for away missions, not even being able to control them. Then you move up to personal craft of your own when you're ready to fly your own ship. And finally a Starship as a sort of Guild House, complete with quarters, personal ship docking, and eventually instances where the players take control of the ship in battle. Maybe even have quests only available to players when they have a starship, a mobile quest station.
