Notice to all game developers - ditch the monthly fee and in-game advertising will be accepted. Charging a monthly fee while having advertising will never go over well.

As for player advertising, seems like a great way to get your account banned. :)

Your notice seems personally charged and not market tested. As a CoH paying subscriber, the current in-game ads don't bother me... and they can be turned off for the people it does bother.

In CoH's case in particular, they said that 100% of ad revenue goes right into development, not some CEO's pocket. So it's almost like fundraising for my favorite video game. I don't mind it one little bit.

Plus, with CoH, the in-game ads seem to fit the billboards in the city perfectly. My fiancée didn't even notice they were there until I pointed them out.

I'd rather see in-game advertising AND pay a monthly fee if it means more development money going into my favourite game and not see the abuse that 'free' MMOs often get. You don't want your MMO-of-choice to be entirely dependent on ad revenue, or else they end up doing everything they can to chase that money.

In reality, the ad model in CoH/V is as good as it is going to get - opt-out if you want, it's pretty unobtrusive since it is just limited to billboards. Plus player-made ads makes it even more acceptable.
