Honestly, I've never had a better beta experience than Star Wars Galaxies. City Of Heroes runs a very close second.

Most of my beta screenshots are on Flickr, particularly those from the very last night of testing.

I can remember one of my first days in SWG. A friend from work had convinced me to give it a try. It didn't take much convincing tbh, I just wasn't sure if my connection could take it.

So after running round seeing places like Obi Wans home, the escape pod, the Sarlaac Pit etc my friend (Master Pikeman / Master Doc spec) took my to see a small Imp outpost.

I sat on the hill staring down on all the little stormtroopers while he ran off to 'fetch something'.

About 2 minutes later I get a message saying "get ready for some fun". Next thing I see is a Krayt Dragon being kited into the middle of these stormies and all hell breaks loose.

He manages to lose aggro and we sit there watching the devastation unfold.

Good times not soon forgotten.

Great read! I thought the fact that you needed so much just to create a guild was a great part of the game. I was a casual player like yourself, and started out along the Architect path. It took a while to do, but it was all worth it. And if you couldn't do it within your guild, some hardcore guild had them on a vendor some place if you were willing to look (and cough up the credits).

Jedi were obviously the most contentious part of the game, but I truly believe if they were implemented properly they would have been both a draw to the game and not a problem for it. Needless to say, SOE completely dropped the ball.

Just wandering around tat shooting womp rats and then afterwards resting in my scout camp just to find out a large Dewback coming from behind :( ... I need to run faster uphill!

Do you remember the dynamic adventure spawns that would pop up randomly as you moved through the wilderness? Everything from moisture farms with quest-offering NPC's to Imperial Stormtrooper squads on foot-patrol.

Or the predator AI that would set a creature to tracking you... following just at the edge of radar until you attacked something else or stood still for too long (went AFK). Then it would charge in, full of fury. I swear those Talus spiders gave me the creeps.

I think they pulled both of those things either late in beta or right after launch. The servers of 5 years ago just couldn't keep up. :(
