Great walk through, probably simplified the love affair many had with the early game and the element of social interaction, SWG was about people.

Great, I say until the last paragraph. Did SOE drop that one in here?

Hmm. I agree. I took that part out; I was trying to make the point that the new community is strong, but you make a good point - it's not as strong as the old one was.

Awesome thanks Mike, I really enjoyed the post and it took me back down memory lane.

If someday I could play SWG pre CU or even post CU, I'd be very happy indeed. While SOE try put a rosy complexion on things externally, there must be less than 10k players in SWG now who play semi-regularly (compare that to EVE's 27k concurrent users) and it just shows you how underpopulated the game is, even despite these patch up jobs that are regularly rolled out.

I imagine there must be more to the NGE than just the commercial aspect, or it would have been rolled back some years ago.

A good, balanced article in almost all respects except in your basic conclusion regarding the NGE:

This is not true in my own case nor in the case of many others who have been discussing your article on mmorpg.com and gamespy.

We left for one - or more - of the following reasons;

The reduction of 36 professions to nine;

The transformation of the alpha profession from an 'earned' unlockable class to a starter class;

The devaluation of the crafter and the entertainer classes to cosmetic but unnecessary professions beside the combat classes;

The introduction of levels for all professions rather than a class system of mixing and matching skills that you as a player found desirable for your character;

The combat system which changed from a real-time, turn-based system to an 'aim and twitch' system;

And the clumsy and clunky new GUI created to service this new FPS combat system (it was heavily rumoured - with many rumours emanating from SOE's labs in Austin - that the GUI was designed to make the game ideally playable not by PCs but by consoles in preparation for a transfer of the game to a console platform, prossibly Sony's PS3).

All these changes shared a common purpose - to make the game, in the eyes of the developers, 'simpler', 'faster' and, in the words of Nancxy Macinyre, then VP of Global Marketing at Lucas Arts, a move to a 'Kill. Get Treasure. Repeat' cycle.

So, SOE took what was essentially an open-ended 'sandbox'-type game to a closed, linear experience based around levelling. That's why I left the game; not because of 'bugs.

And why did SOE make these changes? They did so to make the game more like World of Warcraft, a game launched a year after SWG and which enjoyed spectacular success. However, by boilting on the poorly implemented NGE system on top of the pre-existing game, they have in fact created more bugs, glitches and game-breaking mistakes than SWG ever had before - quite unlike the suprbly polished WoW.

I had many reasons for leaving. Changes to the game that I didnt ask for, the continual bugs that still havent been fixed from launch and for the blatant bait-n-switch tactic by SOE. They released Trials of Obi-Wan touting a lot of great new items for use in various professions. They did this to get the cash up front for the expansion and then announced the NGE with very little forewarning. People were outraged that they were tricked into purchasing an expansion to have a shot at getting an item to enhance their chosen profession only to be told that that profession was getting removed. SOE lied and cheated their customers and many(at least 150k subs) walked because of their disrespect and outright greed.

Its for this reason I do my very best not to purchase any item or game with the name Sony on it. Sony and SOE flat out suck.

Actually I left November 15, 2005 because the game they replaced my game with SUCKED. I stay away and watch the progress of SWG Pre-CU emulators, because NGE SWG pretty much sucks.

Don't understand how you could miss the obvious. In fact, the strength of the Pre-CU EMU communities that are currently still strong and still in existence should explain that to you.

I have no need to rehash the history of SWG, I lived it from launch day, 5 years ago. The lessons learned from the history of SWG are actually quite obvious and I am sure the industry studies this case well. BUT, Stop trying to rewrite history.




Extra Tid Bit for you--But you know what the major thing I learned from SWG's history is? Who cares about the bugs if the design of the game is interesting. I would take a buggy SWG over any bugless MMORPG out there today. This is a lesson SWG Veterians had to learn the hard way.
