Fantastic job on this piece Brendan.

You noted the relative ineffectiveness of the more numerous Caldari opposed to the outnumbered but deadlier Gallente. I suppose in some ways this reflects the stereotype of EVE Online being ‘Caldari Online’-- lots of Raven piloting mission runners who’ve ditched the Level 4’s for factional warfare? When I began playing EVE, most everyone was saying you should “go Gallente for PvP.” It seems that ethos of ship (and race) choice carries over into FW.

You also wrote that the lack of rewards - beyond ranks/bragging rights - is a downside. Would you like to see the life of a militia pilot become a viable profession in EVE, by CCP attaching greater isk rewards to factional warfare?

It is interesting to see that the Caldari militia actually does prefer caldari ships. The gallente militia in kind also fields mostly gallente ships. There's no requirement to do so or bonuses to be had from it, indicating to me that people are really getting into the spirit of Faction warfare.

The life of the militia pilot is a viable profession in a sense. I make a large profit by using disposable ships and collecting loot. Each kill nets me a few Tech 2 modules which provides enough isk to buy a new ship or two. Pilots who can't handle the losses are strongly advised to use cheap, disposable ships. Another option is to join a player militia like my own corp (Pillowsoft) who can help with losses and provide players with free disposable ships.

For me, the main gripe isn't the lack of personal rewards but the lack of faction rewards. Everyone knows that as a general rule you will lose money when pvping. Personal rewards to mitigate that would encourage people to farm FW for profit rather than for the PvP experience. Rewards to mitigate loss would also encourage people to bring more force to bare without considering the consequences. Right now players field what they can readily afford to lose, which is exactly how it should be.

As I said, the main gripe for me was lack of faction rewards. Owning a system doesn't help your faction at all, causing the whole system-capturing affair to be a little disappointing.
