the lack of console MMO's in the current generation is a surprise especially on the PS3 and X360. The PS3 has out of the box support for USB keyboards and mice as well as bluetooth device support. I "think" the X360 supports USB devices too (but not having one I don't know).. and even if it doesn't it's just a minor OS patch away. When TFLO was cancelled it took away what I saw as my only reason to get Xbox Live.. oh well, I look at it as money saved.

I always figured it was due to the short life-span of consoles. If a company starts working on an MMO when a console gets near launch, it'll still be a few years into that console's lifespan when the game ships. And then 3 or 4 years later the console gets replaced by a new version, and suddenly the MMO is orphaned...

Because console gaming is sit back on the sofa and FPS away, or stand up with friends and rock the guitar hero. Both very fund and hold a solid place on the console. MMO is an RPG experience with more depth and complexity and belongs on the PC. (it required a mouse and keyboard, not a controller).
thats why.

I argue that this is a bit of tunnel vision.

Phantasy Star Online was a not-quite MMO (more like a small group server game like Diablo), but it used console controls, had inventory, weapons upgrading, questing and all the general complexities that MMOs are known for. Phantasy Star Universe expanded on that and had cities and planets you could explore.

I think if companies took a more Japanese design approach to making console MMOs, specialized the controls to emulate something more like Final Fantasy or an adventure game, we have great potential for this budding genre.

Wasn't FFXI a successful console MMO? Hell, it's on 2 consoles(PS2 and 36), in addition to PC.
