My thought when I heard this news was that the EMI people, like any company in the music industry, is groping for ways to secure their business model in the face of rampant copying. They probably thought that the pioneer of SL, who was also noted for supporting reverse engineering, open-source, libsecondlife, etc. could help them figure out how to make money even when everybody copies your stuff. Cory himself may even believe that he has some concepts about how to do that, because he is very ideologically driven with this new cyber-communism. Many people in these online industries are desperate to drink the Kool-Aid of the new-agers telling them it is possible to stop worrying about copying and make money by...selling t-shirts. Or..."community experience". Or...flash 2-D worlds. Or...live music concerts...or something. I think many will be watching to see how they pull the rabbit out of the hat.
