I don't think you'll see the subscription model evaporate anytime soon... but the man makes a lot of sense regarding box sales.

Look at the success of EvE Online as an example.

Right now, most (all?) MMO titles include a free trial period but they almost all require a box-sale to unlock it.

The SOE MMO's don't anymore... just download, sign up for Access and play. As a result, they've been getting the lion's share of my MMO budget. =)

I think St. John makes a good argument that these days, box sales are actually a LIMITER on market growth.

Glad you picked up on this article, because he's right in a lot of ways. AoC, with all it's loading screens, could make a fortune just by getting rid of the subscription and allowing loading screen advertising to pay for it. You could still sell the boxed game, but no subscription, that would drive the sales of even more boxes.

I just think that the future of gaming is so much brighter once they get advertising involved, because you could give away games, or charge less, get rid of monthly fee's, and make so much more money. Plus advertisers would get what they want, that audience that is no longer watching TV, and reach them. Not only that, but they could get real world, instant feedback on the number of views, who is viewing, where they are, and more. Advertisers eat that stuff up.

So gaming needs to move towards advertising, it's going to be huge, and they just need to do it right. Loading screens are the perfect chance, and I doubt you'll find many intelligent people who would be against no monthly fee in exchange for loading screen advertising. I'd jump on that in a heartbeat.

I'm with you on that.

I was skeptical at first, even resistant. Maybe it was a knee-jerk response to advertising 'tainting' my gameplay. And honestly, I really do still have some reservations about how this would/will play out.

But as I rack up MMO subs, I find I'm limited in what I can do because of the expense involved. If advertisers want to pick up my tab via ad-sponsored gameplay, so be it.
