I hope MMO designers do go on hating themselves, contrary to what Damion said, because grinding has needlessly been synonymous with MMOs for too long. I'm beginning to think the genre needs to die so it can be reborn, because it's flawed at the most fundamental level.

To clarify, I'm not saying repetitive actions are the problem. Repetitive actions only become a grind when that content is so boring that players consciously trudge through it to reach a goal. Goal-focused games are fine, but the journey should be enjoyable too. Only the MMO genre universally accepts that the journey can feel like slave labor and the goals are all that matter. That's what I call grinding, and it should die a horrible, horrible death.
