There was an online multiplayer mounted combat game that came out a few years back. It was independently developed and a few of my friends were heavily into it for awhile. The name completely escapes me. I'll see if I can dig it up.

From the sounds of it, though, it was more like a mounted combat simulator than a simple fight mechanic.

mount and blade is what you're probably thinking of. Never played myself, but I've heard of it before.

Back in "old" SWG I could fight off a mount .. not do any special attacks however shoot that standad attack. Also begin a creature handler I'd jump off my Bantha and order it to attack. Now thats what WoW needs. Bliz seem hesitant to add any mounted combat abilities in fear of PvP QQ I guess.

There is a single player action RPG called Mount & Blade (http://www.taleworlds.com/) that has great mounted combat.

Is it just me hallucinating, or have we recently heard about (1) mounted combat (AoC) and (2) mounted combat (WoW WotLK)?

The biggest hurdle to mounted combat is finding a solution to kiting - immersion breaking and potentially exploitative when the kite-ee is a mob, and day-ruining if the kite-ee can't retaliate effectively.

One feature I'd like to see if having your mount actually stick around when you dismount, with faster re-mounting if you're just hopping off to pick up an item off the ground and then ride away. The mount doesn't necessarily have to be effective in combat, but I suppose it could be attackable and players could have to carry some sort of medicine or food to help the poor mount recover when killed. (Alternately, mounts could be cheap and disposable, with the skill to ride them being what costs time/money to obtain, and the inconvenience factor being the main dis-centive to allowing harm to befall your trusty steed.)
