Experience loss, adds excitement and challenge because you actually DONT want to die, negative experience/deleveling? sadistic and irritating, as no matter how much hard work you put in, poof, it could all be taken away... especially when you delevel from the "max level" and lose everything your wearing (FFXI style).

I have no problem with challenges, and personally ive long been a critic of wow's "pointless grind" mechanics, while on the other hand, FFXI was too punishing from an xp front, while on the other hand had AMAZINGLY challenging storyline mission battles that were so incredibly satisfying to beat, youd see people go all out, pull out all the stops, items, reraises, tanks, level up classes specifically to do certain fights, it was amazing.

That is a challenge, there was an actual punishment for failing, and there were great rewards for succeeding, and none of the fights were easy, they required proper execution from everyone in the party to succeed.
