In a strange case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing, Vivendi Games, in its latest financial press release, has stated that "Blizzard Entertainment's second expansion, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2008." While that's exciting, Blizzard themselves have not made any official announcement about the expansion's release date.
Does Vivendi think that no one's reading these things besides their investors and business partners? Can this be true? If not, it's a serious error that shouldn't be on a financial press release. We're waiting for Blizzard's response to see if there's going to be any kind of spin control on this. In the meantime, revel in the impending release!

We all new it was going to come out by the end of the year anyway. It's the surprises that we don't know about yet that would make this a big story.

I agree, second half of 2008 isn't exactly a spoiler. Now if they provided an actual date then I'd take notice, but the 2nd half of 2008 is nebulous enough in that they could release it in early 2009 and no one would blink.

I strongly doubt this. One of the things that makes Blizzard great is that they do NOT, as in never, release a game before its time. Tell me of a Blizz release that was a major flop, I dare you. Blizzard has made polish in their games a point of pride that I don't think any other developer group has been able to match (with the possible exception of Valve). It will be out when it's ready, maybe 3rd quarter, probably 4th.

Ouch.
I'll bet money, no matter when WAR releases, WotLK will release exactly one week before it.
A bit ruthless, Blizzard. I didn't think WAR was even that big a threat to you.
