I'm a senior team leader in a globally-known household name company. I have daily responsibility for quite literally millions of dollars of transactions. I have worked for several blue chip household names in similar positions of responsibility and trust. My guild leadership experience has been on my CV for over five years.

If you think that the skills you gain from being a - and let me stress this - GOOD guild leader/raid leader are inapplicable to corporate environments, you're crazy. They're ENTIRELY applicable. Of course, it matters how you talk about it in the interview. A CV is nothing more than a set of hooks for further questions. And "Guild leader of successful online gaming guild" provokes a lot more questions than "I like to read and play squash" under your hobbies. (Trust me on this. I'm also a hiring manager.) Questions like "What's that about then?" and "What made you put this on your CV?".

Paintball scares me - it suggests competitive aggression. Guild work, on the other hand, is all about *team play*. Team players I can use. They know how to trust; how to focus; how to do their job and what it means to the others if they don't; how to react creatively; all the stuff Cameron said.

Get a little creative, think a bit harder about job skills and what your CV ought to be. Intrigue someone. It works.

How embarassing would it be to list on your resume "1980s - Present: Successfully showered, 1998-2002: Spoke to a woman on multiple occasions" ? How creepy would it be reading that as an employer?

Listing yourself as a raid leader is EVEN WORSE THAN THAT.

Being an MMO player and someone who looks through CV's once in a while, I can say I'd be in two minds about hiring a Raid Guild member. I'd be much more inclined to look favourably on a CV with references to Social/RP guild activities.

I agree that being in a Raid guild 'should' help with skills employers are looking for. However even in the gaming community Raid guilds have a reputation for being the home of obsessive players. Although well organised, they are organised for the soul purpose of doing repetitive tasks over and over again for little reward, often to the detriment of other social activities... wait... that's perfect for most jobs! Its definitely time for business to look to Raid guilds.

Seriously though, I'd hope in ten years 'Raid Guilds' don't even exist in the same way they do at the moment. I'd hope that game design has moved on enough that being in a Guild doesn't emulate most peoples working lives. It is, after all, a social hobby (notice how I didn't use the G word there) and not a second job.
