World of Warcraft has done in this somewhat by allowing the heavy UI customization they do. I know it's not the exact same thing, but if you've ever used Auctioneer, just to name one mod, you know that mod has virtually created it's own meta-game within WoW.

I also think this idea could work fantastically in heavily instanced setting like DDO or Guild Wars. Allowing each user to create their own instances, which remain separate but accessible from the main world. I wonder if that is the approach CoX is taking? I might have to dust off that subscription and have a look.

Well, not everyone does... but a number of games do. UI customization is nice, but it's not quite the all-inclusive player-driven virtual experience of the future I had in mind.

The reason I left FFXI a long time ago was because they started a serious crackdown on people using Windower and I refused to play without it. All I wanted was the game to not dominate my computer and a little bit better functionality that show have been in the game anyway. But instead of going "hey if so many people are using this program, maybe we should look at it and see how it might improve our game" but they did the opposite - ban for a week first offense and ban for life on second. I left and never looked back.

I freakin love how WoW lets you have all these addons and customize the hell out of the UI. Every game should allow something like it. What I would love to see is something like a WoW SDK where players could make their own content and then submit it to Blizzard and they would have contests where every now and then the best was added to the game. That would be awesome and probably the closest to Diablo type mods on an MMO.
