WTF is the use of PG rated sims anyway? Everyone in SL is supposed to be 18+. The end.

I shouldn't be responsible if some trailer trash parents are unwilling to monitor what their kid is doing online.

I'd propose changing them to "Pants" and "No Pants", and revising the guidelines to be less ambiguous: "In a Pants zone, you must wear pants at all times. In a No Pants zone, you must wear no pants at all times."

Jacek: But my no pants are in the wash...

Damen: The point of PG sims is that if people want a safer environment, they can stick to PG sims. Or if they want somewhere to demo to their grandmother :)

PG isn't about protecting kids, Daman. It's about what someone wants to encounter in SL -- although I don't think it is very useful, as there is no enforcement and no standardization.

I think Linden Lab originally was thinking something more like worksafe versus free-for-all content. They definately didn't pick the right naming and it probably should have been (M)ature and (G)eneral.

I originally set up shop in a PG sim because I'd gotten very tired of the happy hall of hookers that was slowly and lag inducingly taking over the previous sim I'd occupied. As a builder and shop holder that wasn't really building anything needing a Mature rating to be displayed I thought it would be more professional setting where I didn't have to worry about clients hearing the automated siren singing of the call-girls.

I was going to rent out the extra space to others and found some interesting details of the rating and its perceived meaning. Most people won't rent PG if they are doing art that may include nudes as they just don't know if a Liason reporting in will side with art or blanket ban anything that may be questionable. Playing with guns is confusing, even if you aren't using something with blood effects and are being sillier than cartoon characters someone might report you.

And some people do not pay attention to the ratings period. I've had to chase more people out of my sim who have decided to randomly drop one of their expensive sex toys and go at it than I care to count. Some of them have been embarrased and said they hadn't noticed the rating. I can somewhat believe that because a lot of sims are mixed by rating, I have Mature sims on two sides.

Lastly they won't let you change it on the mainland. I submitted a request for a change of rating and even after having paid for and paid tier on the darn thing for over a year. I was told that would be technically impossible. Like changing one letter is so hard. I can't recommend PG to anyone any more, its just too ambiguous as to what visitors and the Lindens may find inappropriate.

I'm not sure this is strictly true. For the longest time, Thams was PG and could not be changed to Mature because there was no majority owner. I'm not sure what percentage of the the sim was required (i would presume enough to warrant concierge status?) but eventually it *was* changed and now contains content to reflect that change. You may wish to get in contact with the majority owner for that sim and see how she was able to get that change made.

We could always go over to the ESRB system - this world seems more like a game rather than a movie after all.

It's my understanding that the MPAA frowns on use of it's rating systems for anything that isn't a film or other such product that falls in their area. That's why the ESRB doesn't use the same ratings codes as the MPAA: They're not allowed to.

Hmm Standard and Mature.
Tame and Naughty.
Pants and No Pants is growing on me.

They need to just pick two terms and spell it all out. No more of the "common sense" crap.

Changing the naming system would be great as so many people are confused. But having everything mature would be a mistake. Unfortunately too many people think mature equals sex and public nudity. Incredibly, not all of us in SL are here for that.
The current system is broken however. I've been to an animation shop in a PG sim that was selling bondage crosses and the poses to go with them. I don't see how that merchandise is PG.

Last we heard, Mature sims required nudity to be kept indoors or otherwise out of view of the casual passerby. Of course if you had to teleport to bare-ass-naked island, you would expect to see nude people, right?

Mind you, as near as we can tell, the old guides with what the actual restrictions are are gone. We suppose that it comes down to whether the individual abuse-team member remembers that you're supposed to report egregious public nudity in Mature sims or not :)
