Everquest 2 is set 500 years after Everquest 1, and as you said didn't do as well as hoped. Perhaps Guild Wars 2 will be far different than the original, more so than EQ1 to EQ2, but I haven't seen any evidence of that.

Still I agree, EQ3 would need to take a different approach... Steampunk would be neat, but I think they would really need to focus on certain things like accessibility. Things like the excessive number of classes and complex city layouts make it a very difficult game to pick up.

GuildWars2 - this one is higher on my anticipation meter then any other game. Why? Because GW1 is already an EXCELLENT game yet they are promising to fix everything I hated about it; make it an actual persistant world, give avatars the ability to jump(!), and add some sort of open world PvP - a promise that I believe given how balanced PvP is in GW. At the same time the devs aren't running there mouths or artificially working up the hype machine a la AoC and WAR, the same assured confidence they have shown throughout GWs expansions.

While the first three are true, Guild Wars isn't just an MMO. It has elements from the Diablo franchise built into it. And if you recall, Diablo 2 was about just as big, or bigger than the original DIablo in terms of an online community. So Guild Wars may be just the same way.

As for MMO sequals in general, I'd love to see one of FFXI> I never got close to beating it due to it's too low resolution when I began playing it. So a sequal with more modern graphics and video resolution with the same/improved gameplay would be pretty cool in my opinion.

actually, FF XI looks pretty darned good on a PC, and the xbox360 version is decent as well from what I have heard.

Mind you I got tired of the game when it took 3 hours to find a party (because in order to level you _HAVE_ to have a party) only to have it disband in under 30 minutes or be full of people who play very poorly (resulting in deaths, loss of XP, and possible delevelling).

It is a very pretty game when played on the PC in high resolutions with the graphics turned all the way up. It isn't photo-realistic, but it is very flashy.

FFXI use an uncontrollable resolution. It's somewhere around 800x600. All you control is the aspect ratio. It looks horrible on my 1680x1050 monitor. I mean yes it looks good on a smaller 1024x768 monitor, but anything larger and you'll notice how stupid of a decision the lack of a resolution option by Square was.

I agree. GW is a great, great game, but unlike those others a sequel just feels...right. A WoW sequel for example seems weird, but given the model GW follows, GW2 just seems natural. I cant wait!

This article seems to suggest that making the sequel different from the original will increase its chances for success. That's not necessarily true. Asheron's Call 2 failed in part because it was so different from the original. AC1 was an extremely unique game, and while AC2 did some interesting things it also abandoned a lot of the unique aspects of AC1. Sequels are definitely tricky. IMO to be successful a sequel needs to launch at the right time and add new things to the game while capturing the essence of the previous one.

You're right about that. I don't think that change for the sake of change is good. To be clearer on the subject, I think change is only good when what you're changing was a problem beforehand.

As an example, I think a big problem with most MMO sequels is that it's just more of the same setting. For a direct MMO sequel to work properly it has to improve on the previous game's mechanics while giving players a reason to play in the world again.

Timing and first impressions are important to success as well, but those aren't as directly related to the subject of pre-launch development choices.

I would look forward to purchasing eq3 they would need to release it for pc and ps3 though to make it have enough players maybe have it come out with a keyboard and mouse set up though for ps3. My idea for a story line is bringing the gods back say they gods didn't abandon norath but were kidnapped or something and the players are trying to get them back. maybe go from there.
