To be fair later on in the game the necromancer gets a lot of pets with variety of abilities like suicidal bomb pets, pets with heal/mana drains, pets that have a chance to proc a buff, and so on. Simplifying all of the necro's pets down into "A DoT" is over simplifying it a bit.

Yea, to me it sounds like you didn't get very high in levels. If for instance I played a World of Warcraft Warlock to level 15 and the only pet I ever had access to was the imp I would think the same thing. But we all know that warlocks get a variety of useful pets later on.

Yeah the warlock's pet in WoW is basically a DoT as well.
