I don't care if it is calculable grind, badge systems plain and simply solve the issue.

Everyone will gear up at the same pace if they stick together under a badge system. All the developer then has to do is make sure enough badges drop to allow for gear up before boredom with the given content arrives.

A badge system removes all the issues with loot jealousy or progression hopping. The people you start with will be just as geared as you, and, simply put, nobody is going to be able to win the lottery and jump hoops in progression. Given that, you're going to have a greater incentive to be more loyal to and learn to work with the people you've been with.

As for needing to grind content over and over again to get drops or badges or whatever else, the blame there falls squarely on the shoulders of developers who design the game that way rather than build in enough content to prevent it.
