As a composer who has just started writing music for two MMO's, I'm seeing how important music can be for certain styled MMO's. D&D Online, Fallen Earth, and Stargate:Online all are examples of games that have, and require great music. The music helps the player to "switch modes" from our world, to the world of the game. It's not necessarily making the player feel like they're in a specific time and place, it's more like it lets the players engage their imagination, and get into "fantasy" or "storytelling" mode. So, games that have drama and story as part of their gameplay can work very well with strong music.
