"there are at least 5 non-gamer couples, and probably more. Of these, a good portion are likely composed of a gamer and a non-gamer."

What's the other portion composed of? :)

Actually in my case, my girlfriend is a much more hardcore gamer than I am. I phase in and out of 'hardcore' gaming (like right now I'm sort of between MMOs & catching up on TV shows backlogged on the DVR, building web toys or reading) while she's a nose to the grindstone devoted EQ2 player.

It causes a little stress between us, but not too much since most of my 'alternative activities' are solo ones anyway. Also she's a freelancer and tends to play during the day while I'm at work, and work at night while I'm coding or doing some other quiet activity, so we bond that way. Yeah, a real geek couple. LOL.

I have been rather shocked by things I hear over Ventrillo though..people getting into heated arguments with their spouse over them playing, or totally blowing off their kids who need them for one thing or another (the mom in The Guild series seems suddenly much more terrifying since she isn't so far from the truth).

I can see how MMOs would be really threatening to a total non-gamer though. There's your spouse laughing and joking with a bunch of strangers, often through a headset so you have no idea what's being said by them. I can see how it could make you feel like an outsider in your own home.

The same way I would justify watching a football game or going fishing... I DON'T justify it. Why should one need to justify leisure time?

I justify it because it is my only hobby. I don't golf, hunt, fish, build models or anything else like that. I have friends that will golf 36 holes in one day and spend 10 hours at the course at a time. If I played games and had another hobby my wife would likely kill me. As long as gaming is my main thing I can usually get away with the amount of time I spend on it.
