I don't know about your "no straight-up archetypical magic user" comment.

I was in the PvP weekend and the Necro and Demonologist were very much traditional mages. Pets never tank for you, so they're more like buffs and DoTs than actual pets. And the spells of those two classes did way more damage than any of their regular attacks could, so they are nothing more than mages that would sit back and launch spells, with the pets auto-attacking whatever you did.
