Staffing the orientation island really isn't feasible

For one, There is no "orientation island". There are hundreds of the damn things. A lot of new people register every day. No way one sim could hold them all. Newbies are load balanced across dozens of OI sims.

I'm in agreement with prokofy about how it should work. But It needs to be completely autonomous, and work without human guides.

These insights reiterate some of the main reasons why SL isn't ready for prime time anything besides entertainment and digital artistic expression.
I recently attended a Mashup conference online with NMC. Some of the sessions were available in SL and the 2D platform, I believe Adobe Connect. Needless to say, I logged in to SL for the novelty affect and left immediately, opting to attend and benefit greatly from the conference in the simple and usable interface of Adobe. Not a new experience, I just wanted to see if anything had improved. I've had nothing but frustrating experiences in SL as a platform for information sharing and display.

From a media/instructional design perspective, from a interface design perspective, from a learning design perspective there is little going on in SL that is comparably effective to what can be done in a variety of 2D environments and with a variety of far simpler, accessible tools.
The overemphasis of co-presence is really only relevant to completely distance/distributed learning situations, but it's over-rated. Avatars don't share paralinguistic cues, communicative body gestures or any of the critical features of face to face communication that are lacking in distance learning, many of which can be better mediated with skyp and a video camera.

Don't get me wrong I love hanging out in SL, dancing and exploring the incredible design projects going on but that's about all I love about SL.
