"However, what about all those players who are largely pre-ordering for a chance to find out if AoC is right for them?"

If you want a try before you buy they are have a huge open beta starting in early May.

There is no requirement to take advantage of the preorder extra time for $5. Folks can wait till they receive the game and avoid the extra fee.

I wonder if you have to pay the preorder fee to get the in game bonus items though, thats the big question.

I can't believe Funcom can call this an open beta with a straight face. First, it is gated through a paid fileplanet subscription (cha-ching), and second, it is limited to 50,000 participants (http://pc.ign.com/articles/867/867339p1.html)... Now they are charging for early access to an un-proven game. Riiight, they seem to be trying to make as much money on the front-end as possible so they can laugh all the way to the bank!

All this for the Jerry Springer of MMOs.

I thought they did a fairly decent job of letting people know about this. Maybe I was just looking at it more closely than the average person would.

I don't love the fact that every single way to try the game seems to have a cost (except for the PvP beta weekend contest). But then again, the bandwidth for such a huge download (you saw the install size, right?) isn't free.

AoC had better have a great launch, or all of this is going to be looked back on very poorly.

Yeah, I wouldn't call it hidden. I was aware of it and I haven't exactly been studying pre-order details. They seem pretty upfront about it.

While $5 isn't a big deal, I don't like it on principal. They say they want as many people to pre-order as possible so that they can judge what load is going to be like on launch day (they said this in one of their emails). So essentially by pre-ordering we're helping them out.

Then they turn around and charge us $5 to take advantage of the benefit of pre-ordering? That just seems a little sketchy.

What they ought to do is give people that $5 back as a discount on the first month of paid play. Then they get something out of all the people using the pre-order as a 'trial' without pissing off the serious players.

I see the $5 deal as a bonus which as a player you can take it or leave it but it does have benefits. I mean come on $5 for 10 extra days of game play and 3 day headstart is nice.

What I am wondering is the $5 deal for a total of 10 days or 13 days (3 day headstart plus the extra 10 days)?

I agree with 007deadlysins, the $5 is definitely a good deal. Now that I think about it you get 13 days for like 38 cents a day that's better than the monthly rate of 50 cents a day at the average of 15 bucks a month. The 5 bucks goes into the server download price. Blizzard didn't even do that in the beginning. I mean for those that want to just try it out there'll be an open beta. So where's the argument?

I can wait the 3 days. $5 for pre-live when companies like FLS gave pre-play for free? I'm not going to help establish that precedent.

AoC will be US$15 / 30 days (roughly) so think of it as pre-paying for 10 days (US$5/10 = US$15/30) with the 3-day headstart thrown in for free as part of the reward of a pre-purchase.

The deals FunCom made with GameSpot and FilePlanet were greedy. The $5 for this headstart is not.

Probably will be a trend setter now paying for 3-day head starts. I hate having to pay, but probably will do it because it is the weekend and will have the weekend off from work.

I can hear it now though that first night or two there will be emergency hotfixes and people screaming they want their 5 dollars back.

I think Warhammer will probably charge now for a 3-day early access if it goes well for AoC early start.

That's a lot of money to rake in for 3 days early start.

Conspiracy much?

When I ordered from Gamestop it seemed pretty clear right up front about the 5$

Also, regarding the Fileplanet deal, if you check out the AoC forums there's a handy dandy sticky that explains their reason for going this route. I know I'm looking like a fanboy here and I don't really care but take off the tinfoil. Not everyone is out to do bad things to you. Sometimes when someone says they did a thing for this or that reason, that really is the reason. You know, cake is cake.

Unless the cake is a lie.

I'll definitely buy the 3-day headstart. As others have pointed out, you're getting 13 days for $5 whereas your normal MMO fee is $5 per 10 days. I can't really see the problem here.

The real issue seems to be with people who preorder an MMO to get the 3-day headstart as some sort of free trial. That's not what they're offering you to begin with.

If someone is worried that they won't like the game enough to keep playing it, you have the standard options available to you: wait for reviews, wait for price drops, or wait for a real free trial.

$5 gets you 3 days of "early access" then 7 days to get the retail version of the game. I guess the smart money is to not enter your retail key until your 7 day 'grace period' is up.

If you get the game on launch day and enter your retail key, you get 30 days from launch day before you have to pay, thus losing your 'free days.'

So I guess if you're smart about it, it can work out to be decent. But I bet a lot of people will get their box and enter their key and screw themselves out of those "free days."

I'm not so sure the $.00 fee was a very good PR move. But you are getting 10 days of playtime for it so really it's kind of a wash. It does bug me, but not enough to lose interest in the game.

This weekends PvP event at Gamestop was a blast. There there were a few kinks, overall I loved what I saw and played. Can't wait for open beta.

GRT. Does it say somewhere that you lose the free days by entering the key?

I recently got lured into WOW for the first time and friends wanted me to get access to the mail system so I entered the keys before the 10 day trial was up and in the remaining days were tacked on to the subscription.

I highly doubt Funcom is going to drop anyone's days especially if they have charged for them. That would lead to a huge headache in billing and bad press.

I have to say this is not a big deal and one of the dumbest things to make a story on. $5 gets you a 3 day head start.

Now keep in mind this is a pvp game, that many people are coming to for *gasp* pvp. This means jump on all that comes with being in a game with pvp.

Plus you get 10 days total of time that is added. From what I've read it is added to the end of your game time once you enter the full game key. To me it seems like a good deal. And its not mandatory, don't pay it if you don't want.

It is $5 for 10 days of game play... normal suscription is $15 a month . Lets assume theres 30 days in a month... your paying $5 per 10 days... thus its is simply paying for the time you get on the product. In addition, you get to start 3 days earlier... of course... just about everyone looking to play has preordered.. so you don't really get an advantage.

If you dont want to pay it, dont start 3 days earlier... simple as that... but unless your looking to milk the 30 days included with the game then stop...

Your paying the normal subscription fee, but on a smaller scale. 10 days vs 30!

I like pizza.
So sometimes when in a restaurant,i'll try a different kinda pizza.
it's a gamble worth the $15.

also an mmo fan..and to gamble $5 or even $15 on a new game is well worth the gamble.

All this drama about $5..:)
